That's a good idea, to calculate and compare the cost of buying/installing them myself. I'll do that. I was thinking last night that the amount they'd charge me to "buy" a panel must be a lot higher than what I'd pay to buy one myself elsewhere, due to them also installing & maintaining the panels, and them paying the rent and/or cost of the land where they are put up.
I've also contacted them to get more details on the contracts.
I've read about similar programs elsewhere in the county (there's even one where it looks like anyone can sign up, not limited to customers of a specific electric company), so I expect it must be legal. My electric co's program is currently limited to a certain amount of Megawatts, so maybe that is due to a limit on the max federal credit they can get.
The other day I drove by a house that had a single smallish panel (maybe 3' x 1') set up on a table by their front porch. They must be using it to charge batteries; thought that was a good idea too.
