bike lanes
City of Columbia removing bike lanes from Farrow Road shortly after putting them in
Another news report mentioned that drivers had been driving in the bike lane, and that there had been some "near misses" (I think they meant car-to-car, not car-to-bike, but am not sure).
I drove down that road a few weeks ago myself, and was confused by the new lane markings. Based on those markings, I wondered if maybe the right lane was meant to be a bike lane, with a buffer zone between that lane and the car lane I was in. But I was confused because there was *NOTHING* to indicate that it was a bike lane - I kept looking for some sign. There were just extra white lines in the road. No bicycle symbols or anything like that. So of course drivers are going to be confused, and people are going to complain!
Eh. But I'd still prefer having a physical barrier between any bike lanes and car lanes, for everyone's safety.
Miscommunication about the bike lanes going in and drivers’ confusion doomed the project, Nuelken believes.
The bike lanes were created during a resurfacing project on Farrow Road. The road had four northbound and southbound lanes with a central turning lane. It went to two lanes going in each direction with buffer zones and bike lanes on both sides of the road. About two weeks ago the finalization of the bike lanes, which would have included additional signage and road markings, was put on hold, according to Nuelken.
The city announced Friday that it would be removing the lanes.
