Sherlock impressions
After watching the final Series 3 episode without captions, and then again with captions, there were still a few things I didn't quite catch or understand. The dialogue and storyline go so fast in this series that there's no time to stop and ponder for a moment over anything one hears or sees, or else one ends up missing other parts of the story. That is, unless one watches it in a format* where one can pause, reverse**, and replay it.
However, the captions did allow me to catch several things that I missed the first time.
Like the 2 "Redbeard" references.
And this little exchange***:
SHERLOCK: I exploited the fact of our connection.
JANINE: When?!
SHERLOCK: Hmm?
JANINE: Just once would have been nice.
SHERLOCK: Oh. I was waiting until we got married.
JANINE: That was never gonna happen!
They really are trying to portray Sherlock as asexual, aren't they? (yay! a real asexual character!) (When I saw the episode the first time, I was slightly disappointed that it seemed to imply that Sherlock had had sex with her, even though the relationship was exposed as a ruse.)
Oh, and Magnussen asking about the bathroom in Sherlock's flat. I missed that the first time. With the captions, the exchange about it being the same (dirty?) as the rest of the flat made sense. But only now afterwards does that click as being partially related to him relieving himself in the fireplace.
Oh, and the 2nd time, this exchange made me laugh:
JOHN (indignantly): But it’s Christmas.
(Sherlock smiles.)
SHERLOCK: I feel the same.
(He turns and sees John’s expression. His smile fades.)
SHERLOCK: Oh, you mean it’s actually Christmas.
These parts still confused me:
When Magnussen looked at Sherlock, he chuckled at how many pressure points there were - they were scrolling by too fast for me to read. But if he knew about so many pressure points, why did he need to do the Watson-bonfire thing, to find out if Watson was a pressure point he could use?
After mention of his brother and familial sentiment, Mycroft said "You know what happened to the other one." I thought that sounded like it referred to another sibling, and apparently I was correct.
Is Janine the person whom Sherlock was sort of flirting with at the wedding? I'd have to rewatch the other episode to be sure. I don't remember the lady in the other episode having such a distinctive accent (which oddly reminds me of Callie in Gray's Anatomy - though that is also influenced by the scene where she was walking in the apartment with a shirt and bare legs).

**I was going to write "rewind", but that word no longer seems accurate. Is there a better word than reverse?

and it's those six items that keep scrolling. I imagine that the production people couldn't be bothered to come up with a longer list and so they scrolled it to make it look like a lot more items. They seem to forget that these days we have a Pause button and we're not afraid to use it!
(And I don't understand why it's phrased "Hounds of the Baskerville". Baskerville is a place and doesn't merit a 'the' in front of it.)
And yes, Janine was the chief bridesmaid at the wedding. She did have an Irish accent in that episode as well.
