the darkness before halloween

...when people turn off their porch lights. Even on a Sunday, the day before, even though around here trick or treating is even less likely to occur on a Sunday than on other days of the week.

I wonder what percentage of households still put out decorations and give out candy. I think it must be very very low. So low that the radio commercial that played twice this evening seems incongruous to me. A female speaker was saying "You don't want to be one of *those* houses where they run out of candy and start handing out pennies".

Not that I've been driving around looking, but I've only seen 2 houses with decorations this year, other than mine (and mine doesn't have much, just some lights and such). One of those 2 houses I only saw because my mom mentioned it to me, and when I drove by this evening, the lights weren't on. Most likely to discourage anyone from thinking they were giving out candy today instead of tomorrow.

I can't imagine anyone in this day and age, young or old, would knock on some stranger's door to trick or treat, just because it has a porch light on, with no decorations up. It's rare enough to get trick-or-treaters at my house, even with Halloween lights up. Surely this turning off of porch lights is just something ingrained in people of an older generation who grew up when trick or treating was more common...

But according to a survey last year, 78% of households were giving out candy. WHAT????!!!! The actual survey results say 78% of *parents*, not all households. But still, that sounds awfully high to me. Is it only in the South that neighborhood trick or treating is so low? I have no actual childhood experience with trick or treating in residential neighborhoods like where I live now. As a kid, I only ever trick or treated in military housing areas.

Here's another list of Halloween survey results, from 2013 and 2014.
61 percent of the American public will decorate their front porch or door to welcome trick-or-treaters (69 percent of households with children will do so).
WHAT???!!!
76 percent of households plan to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters this year.
So... that means that 15% of households that plan to give out candy may do it without any decorations after all? Or maybe they simply do it at an alternate location like a school or church.

Anyway. I've got my outfit for tomorrow figured out. I won't wear the vest actually, as it is way too warm for that.

(Ha! Finally found an opportunity to wear my impractical clothes out in public.)
(Hey, if you look closely, you can see my pink-bow-wearing spider hovering in the background.)

I made a batch of "Pistachio and Rosewater Cupcakes" (sans frosting) today, but forgot to add in the pistachios. They taste great anyway.

dirt ducts snakes

Last weekend I mucked about in 2 crawlspaces.

At the new house, one of the ducts had been loose and leaking out hot air (hopefully the reason for the high gas usage last month). An HVAC technician fixed it, but I wanted to look around to make sure there was nothing else obviously wrong-looking down there, and to get photos of everything.

I explored a part of the crawlspace with my high-intensity flashlight, headlamp, and camera. But a big low-hanging duct blocked my way to the other half of the crawlspace.

I wondered how the HVAC guy had managed it. Surely if a small person like me couldn't get through, even slithering on my belly... I suddenly wondered if there was another entrance into the crawlspace. There were no other entrances around the outside of the house. But in the garage closet, I found an access hatch. Bingo! Qiao knew about it, but I hadn't thought of asking him before-hand.

So I went in that way, found the duct that the HVAC guy had repaired, and took a bunch more photos.

Then my mom told me that she had been in her crawlspace unsuccessfully trying to find out where one replaces the filters. Since I was full of dirt from the other crawlspace anyway, I offered to take a look. The headroom in her crawlspace is somewhat better than at the other house. It turns out her system has an electronic air filter which has been turned off since she got the house. I'll have to go back to check what is inside the unit; when I was down there, I didn't realize that the front panel can be pulled off. It's possible the original cells may have been removed and replaced with a disposable filter - that may be why the switch was turned off.

There was a surprise in my mom's crawlspace: a long long long snake skin winding around the HVAC system. A snake must have shed its skin. Or maybe multiple snakes. Or maybe one snake multiple times. It was so long that I hope it wasn't a single shedding from a single snake.

Now I know to watch out for snakes when crawling around in crawlspaces.

So, the Trip. a few weeks back.

In the airport, leaving, Qiao's hat almost got left behind. But Forestfen valiantly sent it through the security checkpoint after us.

I already mentioned the beverages in the plane and the alarming car. (Dasani sparkling lime, like unsweet Sprite).

I had planned to have my name added to the rental car contract as an additional driver, but the person at the counter in Boston said it wasn't necessary; that we were "domestic partners" even though not married, as we live at the same address.

First stop after leaving the airport: My Thai Vegan Cafe for dinner. Google Maps told us to take an exit that didn't exist as we were driving through the tunnel from the airport. Then it directed us to drive all the way across town, and would have had us turn around and drive back the same way. I decided not. We eventually got to the right place. The staircase up to the restaurant, which reviews had described as being so sketchy, turned out to be a perfectly fine staircase. Though admittedly not so great for someone with a bad foot and knee.

The ambiance in the restaurant was nice (not fancy, but pleasant enough), with large windows looking out on downtown Boston after dark. The food was delicious. Appetizers: Tofu Cigars (crisp! fried! tasty!) and mango salad (tangy! zesty! fresh!). For an entree I had a creamy tofu & mock meat curry served over avocado. They had vegan bubble tea and chocolate layer cake too. The cake was to-go, and oh was it good the next day. So good, I'm still thinking about it.

Then we drove to our hotel (smelling petunias before seeing them), checked in, and slept. At home, we sleep with fans on. Qiao likes the wind. We both like that it drowns out other noise. On the trip, I used the Simple Noise App on my phone along with a small portable speaker. In brown noise oscillating mode, it sounds ocean-like. The speaker takes 2 AA batteries, and we used it 7 nights for at least 8 hours each night. The batteries surprisingly never died.

In spite of getting good sleep each night, my eyesight didn't seem to improve any during the whole week.

The next day, we scouted out the concert venue early in the day (saw a giant cruise ship) and returned to the hotel for lunch. I would have liked to walk around downtown a bit, but Qiao's foot (or hip?) was acting up badly. Later we went to the concert. Tweety Bird got to watch the concert too, tucked into Qiao's shirt pocket.

On Monday we drove to my dad's place and spent the rest of the week there, taking it easy. My dad puts the rest of us to shame, the way he's exercising and staying in shape. My step-mom had tools for making hand-made cards, and showed me how to use them. She also showed me how to play Word Jewels. I played a bit of pool. Walked around the circle a few times. Went to a Lebanese restaurant. Listened to a recording of my grandma that I hadn't heard before.

On a grocery trip, I came across some Maya Kaimal ketchup, so I promptly got 2 bottles to take home with us. To avoid a nasty mess should the bottles break, I carefully wrapped them in clear bubble wrap, and put each in its own ziplock bag. Then I further wrapped them in clothing when packing my suitcase.

On the trip back home, I was worried we'd miss our connection in DC as the layover was only 40 minutes, and we had to switch terminals via one of those sandcrawler buses. But we made it to our gate just as the plane was starting to board - luckily about ten minutes later than scheduled.

We had a night flight to Columbia. I had forgotten how pretty towns and cities look from up above, lit up at night.

On one of the flights, there was an intercom announcement before landing, "If you leave behind any items on the plane, you can check for them tomorrow on eBay."

At home, unpacking my suitcase, I found a notice that it had been searched by the TSA. That wasn't a big surprise - I had suspected the carefully wrapped bottles in my suitcase would look suspicious through a scanner. Even though the ketchup labels were visible through the bubble wrap, they had sliced apart the cellophane tape I had used to keep the bubble wrap in place.

This is a photo of the beautiful wisteria vine that grows along my fence, from April of this year.

This is what the fence looks like now... the crash itself didn't actually damage the wisteria much, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to cut much of it down, in order to get the damaged fence replaced. I hope it will grow back.

This is a photo of the crescent moon, pre-sunrise of the morning of the crash.

This is what I was wearing for Halloween. The shirt is the one I found at the thrift store. It looks good with red hair as well as blue. The wig was scratchy and warm and the hairs kept getting in my face, but it looked sweet.

More pix later, possibly.

I had a dream about one of the people on my LJ friends-list ([livejournal.com profile] tlttlotd) last night. They were showing off bionic/cybernetic body modifications which they had. There were a whole bunch of these mods, but I only remember an extra pair of arms, and metal hands protuding from the inside of both knees, each grasping a bundle of crossbow-bolts/arrows.

.

I got to see photos taken of me earlier this year. I looked really cute in them. I like the way my hair was then, very short on the bottom and not too long on the top, and no hair pins. The vest I had on looked good too, and I looked so slim and dapper, leaning against the counter with my hands in my pants-pockets. In most of the photos I even had a cute look on my face, which was surprising since I don't normally photograph that well.

Before that, I had already decided to end my experiment with growing out my hair. On Xmas Eve morning, my hair was being quite annoying as usual - it doesn't matter how long it gets, it still manages to curl up and tickle my nose - and I had come to the conclusion that I did not like the way I looked with my hair like that, and that I likely wouldn't like it much better even with it longer. So I cut the front hair into bangs again. Now I don't need to use pins anymore - freedom! (man, those hair-pins were torturous.) I had decided to cut more than that, but that this would do as a temporary measure.

.

I glanced at the glowing Christmas tree and burst into tears, before. This is the first year I've had a Christmas tree on my own, in my own house (although it is really Forestfen's tree, and our accumulated ornaments on it). And it seems odd, somehow. I put it up all on my own, alone. And now it is standing there, alone with me in this house. The lights are glowing pretty.

hair milestone

Today was the first day since I started growing my bangs out that my hair felt comfortable enough not to have to pin it back out of my face. In other words, it wasn't scratching my eyeballs or tickling my nose.

It sure is nice to be able to pull shirts over my head again, without it messing up the pins in my hair. And it looks much better without the pins.

.

I can see the sun as it rises from the yellow room window.

(The sun below the horizon is a window reflection.)
It is surprising how fast the sun rises - on the day I took the above photo, the sun was only halfway over the horizon when I first looked out the window, and that is what I wanted to capture. But in the minute or so that it took me to get my camera from the other room, it had already risen all the way over the horizon, as can be seen in the photo.

I will take a photo every week or so until the solstice, so I can see how the sun moves along the horizon, and what the southernmost sunrise point is... Maybe I'll try to figure out where it should rise on the solstice, based on this data, and then see if I'm right or not.
