A mathematical equation is bothering me. I can't figure out the logic behind it.

"if you had been to two sites that had a 2-1 ratio of men to women, the probability of you being female would be: 1 / (1 + 2 * 2) = 1/5 = 20%"
Why 20%? Why 1 / (1 + 2 * 2) ?

I used to be good at math. Supposedly.

.

It was thundering a bit before, the sky was darkening, and it was getting windy. But then it seemed to pass, without climaxing... without rain. I was going to write that. But a while later, it did start to rain.

.

I just can't stop thinking about it. It's been bugging me since yesterday.
So the probably of you being male would be (1 - the prob of you being female) which would be
((1 + 2*2) - 1) / (1 + 2*2)
which is 2*2 / 1 + 2*2

But Why?
Why multiply those numbers together, and why add one?

It tends to cheer me up lately when I hear the neighbors' dogs barking. Even though it's an aggressive, territorial kind of bark, the antagonism of which used to bother me, and even though they still bark at me like that too. But it lets me know they are still there. The dogs and the people. Yesterday I was somewhat concerned, because the neighbors were loading a moving truck in their driveway when I got home. It would be unfortunate if they moved away just after finally having learned my name right. Plus, I've gotten used to them, even though I don't know them well. I wouldn't want to have strangers move in instead.

Having those dogs there also makes me feel somewhat safer. With those dogs barking at the slightest noise, it probably would deter anyone from trying to sneak in around the backside of my house. At least when the dogs are outside, anyway.

It wasn't good last year when the one dog jumped over the fence on the other side of their yard, trying to get at the person up on the pole who was installing my cable internet. But luckily no one got hurt, the dog was retrieved, and they put higher fencing up on that side of their yard afterwards.

And I don't like the thought of them breeding the dogs, and having a bunch of puppies each year, and selling them. But, oh well. It is how it is.
