cleaning up clutter

It took me all day to clean out one small box out of many that I have around the house. This one had a few items I brought back from Qiao's house after breaking up with him. Deciding what to do with each item. Where to put them, and which things not to keep. It takes me forever.

The dog tags were the hardest. I finally found a small cushioned box to keep them in.

The colorful shiny metallic foil chocolate wrappers compacted into various shapes, I put together with others, in a bigger box with clear lid.

..

I came across the receipt of a 14" flat CRT TV and a Memorex DVD player I bought from Sears in 2006. The TV cost $99. The DVD player cost only $34.99! Both prices were much less than I would have guessed. I still have the TV in a bedroom though I rarely use it. My mom has the DVD player; I have other DVD players now.

I also have a large CRT TV which used to be Qiao's; he didn't want it anymore. As well as an extra LED TV which I was going to replace the CRT with. But the CRT TV turns on instantly while the LED TV (a Toshiba FireTV - avoid them is my advice) sometimes takes several minutes. I suppose I will eventually get rid of the CRT. I don't know if I can find someone local who would want it, considering it still works. I might have to pay someone to take it to the dump. Or take it myself if it's not the horrible smelling landfill place that it would need to go to.

..

On the coffee table is a row of audio cassettes, on which I had copied music for Qiao back when he had a vehicle that played cassettes. I still have the original copies of the music; I don't need the cassettes. So I don't know what to do with them, and they sit there and sit there. I could erase them and take them to Goodwill, I guess? I have occasionally seen home-recorded tapes like that at Goodwill which weren't erased. But I don't think I'd do that.... Hmm, then again what could it hurt. They won't have my name. They won't follow me home to arrest me for having copied copyrighted music to audio cassettes, and then having given the cassettes away.

If someone wants the cassettes for recording their own music to, they can record over them. And if they get a kick out of listening to the music that's already on them, that's great too. But cassettes are old tech; few people would probably want them either way.

Well good, that's one decision made, and an easy solution. Give them to Goodwill in a box along with other stuff I've already put aside to take there.

Why did they recently stop selling the pretty multi-colored o-cel-o scrub sponges in physical stores? No one seems to know. (Google Gemini's explanation seemed to be made up, as the sources it listed weren't related to its answer.)

These sponges always used to come in multiple colors and/or patterns in each pack. New patterns were released every so often, so that each time I bought a pack, it was usually different from the last.

From what I've read, the sponge part is made from cellulose (from wood and plant fibers); only the scrubber part is made from plastic.

Their all-white colored Greener Clean™ Non-Scratch Scrub Sponges don't last nearly as long in my experience, and the color is boring. The webpage for these says "Make a difference with every clean using the 100% recycled scrubbing fibers... These dye-free and BPA-free dish sponges offer a more sustainable alternative to typical cleaning sponges."

The webpage for the pretty colored ones* says "Scrubbing fibers made from 100% recycled content", so I suspect they are about the same good or bad for the planet as the supposedly "greener" ones.

*The colored ones they sell now are not even as colorful as the old ones were. That photo shows both the top and bottom parts of the sponges in only green & white. Will there ever be orange & purple & yellow scrub sponges as in the past? Yes, there are some other brands but the ones I tried didn't work well.

Now when I go shopping, I only see scrub sponges in packs that are all-blue, all-pink, all-white, or all-brown, as well as the old-style heavy duty dark-green on yellow. And some all-purple ones with scrub "dots".

This is a small sampling of various colorful ocelo scrub sponges they used to sell, from Duck Duck Go's image-search results:

This is what a recent store had to offer in the sponge section; they all look pretty much like this now:

I browsed through a Goodwill store. The music CDs were the first thing to catch my eye; I looked through some of them. I don't really want CDs as that requires me ripping the music to MP3 files, and leaves me with a physical CD left over taking up space. But it reminds me of the old days, looking at CDs in stores and taking a chance on some, buying them, never knowing for sure how much I was going to like the music until I got home to listen to it.

One of the CDs that caught my eye was in a foreign language. It looked like Finnish to me, but I wasn't sure. The name on it was Yva plus a last name that I don't remember. It may have started with B. The back side had a picture of someone (presumably Yva the singer) in a blue and white outfit, similar to a traditional Bavarian style dirndl.
Another CD had music from RiverDance.

I didn't end up getting any CDs. I browsed the rest of the store, intending to possibly stop by the CD rack again afterward if I hadn't talked myself out of it by then. But then as I walked by the registers in the direction of both the entrance and the CDs (I'm not sure anymore which I was headed for), the lone cashier there said 'goodbye' or 'have a nice day' or something like that to me. Then when I thought of the CDs, it seemed awkward to stay and look at them again when {goodbyes had already been made}. I stopped in the sunshine of the open doorway and checked my phone messages, mentally debating it. Decided to leave.

At home I looked up this singer Yva. I only found an English singer and a Lithuanian group by that name.
Maybe it was this album by the Lithuanian group Yva, but I don't think so. I think the CD I looked at had only 1 person on it, not 3. And I remember there being a last name along with the Yva. It seemed like an older album. I don't remember what was on the front of the CD. Oh well. I probably wouldn't have liked the music anyway.

..

I came across this name website:
https://www.nameuc.com/talon-name-meaning-origin-popularity/

It has a different pretty image for each name. They are fairly obviously generated by an AI/LLM/whatever it is called for images. A while later I realized the text of the site must have also been generated by a LLM too. (It sounds quite similar to the answers I got when I asked an LLM questions about names.) That indicates to me that the data listed for the names on that site is not very trustworthy. If it hadn't been for the novel pretty name pictures, I might not have noticed/realized that. Many of the other name sites I've come across this last year or more have been similar, I suppose, just without the images. Sigh. How are we going to filter the junk data from the accurate data?

..

Apparently the aurora was visible even near here in South Carolina on Friday night. I didn't read/hear about it until this morning when the sun was already starting to rise. I never imagined an aurora could/would be visible this far south. I remember seeing the crescent moon in the sky earlier while I was out shopping. The sky was normal, not ablaze with colors.

Since the pandemic started, I've worn a face mask when entering all public buildings and stores. There have only been a handful of times I forgot to do so, or remembered while in the store and then put one on.

I don't go out shopping very often - generally 4 to 6 weeks apart. Sometimes I stop and think, has the world changed since the last time? Is is still worth wearing a face mask to reduce the risk of catching Covid and getting long-term side effects? Is the risk low enough to dispense with the precaution? I haven't been sick with anything in 3 years and don't really want to break that streak. I don't care if people don't see my face; maybe I could go on forever like this. But I also feel self conscious, especially at first, and tend to avoid looking at other people even more than otherwise, when wearing a mask.

The South Carolina DHEC website that had been tracking SC COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations stopped doing so as of July and now only shows vaccination stats.

The CDC site still has a tracker:
United States COVID-19 Hospitalizations, Deaths, Emergency Department (ED) Visits, and Test Positivity by Geographic Area

A Positive Covid Milestone (2023/07/17)
"In a sign that the pandemic really is over, the total number of Americans dying each day is no longer historically abnormal."

But: Early COVID-19 Indicators Show Increase: CDC Data (2023/07/24)
"Coronavirus emergency department visits and test positivity are on the rise."

It's been 9.5 months since my last booster shot. Per the following CDC page, I'm not currently eligible for another.

Stay Up to Date with COVID-19 Vaccines
"New vaccines expected in fall 2023
On June 15, 2023, an FDA advisory committee met to talk about COVID-19 vaccines and additional strains of the COVID-19 virus. They recommended that COVID-19 vaccines should be updated to provide protection against the Omicron variant XBB.1.5 for use by the fall of 2023.

A couple weeks ago I decided not to wear a face mask in the first store I went in. I already had second thoughts while walking up to the entrance. What if I get stuck in line behind someone who is coughing and/or sneezing? It's always easier to have a face mask already on in a situation like that, than to have to consider other people feeling antagonized by my action of putting one on in their presence. But I knew the store wouldn't be crowded, so I went through with it, maskless. But I wore a mask in the next 2 larger grocery stores I shopped in.

The following week, my work supervisor told us he had caught Covid at a conference. He said it was his first time of having gotten it.

I am returning a pair of solid bike tires I bought as the size listed in the product description does not match what was sent. The tires are fairly heavy and bulky so I feel it would be prudent to put some buffer material in the box to keep them from thumping around when the box is transported.

Of the fitting buffer material I have on hand, I could either use a heart-shaped mylar Valentine's balloon, or 2 pieces of nice sturdy styrofoam.

I feel weird about putting a Valentine's balloon in the package, even though it would be a good way to get rid of it. (I would feel bad about throwing it away which is why it is still lingering around here in August.)

I feel oddly clingy about the nice sturdy styrofoam because when I wave them in my hands they make a nice breeze, and maybe they'd be good to use as a support for something.

So which shall it be? I think the balloon.

But the styrofoam would be more logical and it would be a good way to get rid of it too.

.

Ah hah! A third option has presented itself - a smaller box that fits inside the bigger box. But then I'd be getting rid of neither the balloon nor the styrofoam and this would be the perfect opportunity...

Ways I currently have of checking the details of things in my past, when my memory does not suffice:

The notes I've written down in my "daily notes" file, about the things I do each day.
The notes I've written down in various other more specific files, like computer notes, etc.
The DW posts and comments I've written.
The emails and texts I've sent and received.
The photos I've taken.
The receipts from shopping in person (these may be photos, scanned PDFs, or text emails).
The spreadsheet detailing where/when I've gone shopping and what I've purchased (includes online purchases) along with the total prices.
My checkbook registers, bank and credit card statements (for purchases/payments/etc).
The call history on my phones.
My browser history.
Things I've written on calendars.
The daily notes I write down as part of my work.

I found this cute and colorful ruffly skirt at Target in the Pride section (it looks so good on the model on that page!). I passed on by with an admiring glance, but came across another one while browsing for knee shorts. You know, like a sign that I should at least have some fun trying it on. The dressing rooms were already closed. But when I held it up against myself in a mirror, it looked so good together with the contrasting colors of my shirt and socks, that into my cart it went.

I find skirts to be impractical, but ruffly ones are fun.

I did go see "Everything Everywhere All At Once" today with my mom, and it was very good. It made me laugh and may have brought tears to my eyes. Reading one review yesterday, I was curious why someone described it as an "R-rated family flick", ie. what made it R-rated, but now I understand.

.

There was a faint fruity smell in my car as I left from my house. I wondered if a clementine had rolled under the car seat last week. I opened the car windows and forgot about it.

After the movie we stopped by Kroger to get some groceries. Mainly corn chips because I'm almost out of corn chips and I need me my corn chips. My mom lingered in the fruit & veggie section, so I glanced around. There were papayas. Say wait a minute, didn't I buy a papaya last week? It was a nice small-size yellowy ripe-enough-to-eat-right-away papaya... I did buy it, didn't I? What happened to it?

Yep, it was under the car seat. I'm surprised it didn't impart a stronger smell to the car; but it helped that the car was parked in the garage and not out in the sun all week. The fruit isn't even moldy. It looks VERY good ripe now though, and I will cut it up after this post.

mushy green

I haven't been keeping close track of the local face mask mandates. But I'm of the impression they've been suspended for the time being. When I went shopping today, I expected not to see anyone else wearing face masks. I planned to wear mine anyhow, and figured people would think I was odd. So, like usual, right?, I thought in reply. But I decided to wear my not-as-tight KN-95 instead of the most protective one.

There were actually a lot of people wearing face masks; not only store employees but other customers too. It seemed like more people were wearing face masks today than last year or the year before.

I bought a can of mushy peas to see what they are like, in spite of the ingredients including artificial color. That would have been a fitting thing to eat on St. Patrick's Day. And if I'd thought of it earlier in the month, I could have put my green fairy lights on the porch.

Among the things I've read about Ukraine was a comment by a local, "The fasting has started", in reference to food supplies being tight. It's a grim thought, in addition to everything else.

It is our night of snow, snow on the ground and air temps below freezing. Tomorrow is today, will be sun and probably melt. Some might survive in the shadows for a bit longer.

On Wednesday I ordered some things on Amazon. I chose an Amazon Day Delivery of Jan 27 for the ones that had the choice, as I'm in no hurry. An email I got today for one item "Sold by Amazon.com Services LLC" says, "New estimated delivery date: Monday, January 24, 2022 - Friday, March 25, 2022".

So either they'll have it shipped right out to me in a couple of days, or maybe it will take 2 months. Weird.

.

Last year, in a store I came across some hologram artworks, 2-d paintings made into 3-d with holograms. 11 by 16 inches in size. They were neat, and I bought 2 that looked like paintings of southeast Asian goddesses.

Later after doing some searching, I discovered that the artist is Zeng Hao, and the paintings are of Kuan Yin, aka Guan Yin. I wonder if whoever made and sold these posters had permission from the actual artists; I tend to suspect not.

But I wanted to ask if any of you know... is there a special name for 3-d hologram artworks of this kind? The store had others with different kinds of artwork on them. But when I searched online, I didn't find anything like it, possibly due to not using the right search terms.

It also is a problem that photos of holograms don't look like holograms, so when looking at images in search results, I can't tell if the items shown are holographic like the ones I have or not.

Lately I've noticed text like the following on various product packages, while out shopping:
"The ... trademark used under license". Along with that, it lists another company name; the company which bought the license to use the trademark on their package.

For example, I've seen LED holiday lights in packages that show the "GE" or "PHILIPS" logos on them, and on the back or side of the box is this small text that says those trademarks are used under license.

Until now when I've see those logos on a product, it made me think that it must be a good product because it's made by GE or Philips, who surely (or hopefully any way) have good design and quality control. But now I'm realizing that the big-name companies don't have anything to do with a lot of these products; they're just making money by letting other companies use their name & logo on products.

Home Depot: The last time (June 2021) I used their self-checkout, it only gave "Print" and "Print+Email" options for the receipt. I chose the latter, but never got the email. Perhaps I typed it in wrong. There was no Email-Only option.

Lowes: The last 2 times I used their self-checkout, it only gave "Print" and "Print+Email" options for the receipt; there was no Email-Only option. When using the regular checkout aisles, the cashier (or maybe it is the card reader unit) gives me an email-only option. It has my email stored and linked to my payment card number, so I don't have to type it in each time, only confirm it.

Kroger: The self-checkout always lets me choose an digital receipt (as long as I remember to select that checkbox on the terminal). Now that I think about it, it's not actually an email receipt. I log into my Kroger account online and take full-page screenshots, which I then save for my records. On one page they show a receipt in the same format as what you would get printed out. On another page, they list everything you bought (using complete words, not abbreviations) along with images of the items, which is very nice.

Food Lion: Their self-checkout did not give an email option for the receipt. It also didn't weigh the items I put in the bagging area, nor nag me when I put my cloth bags over there, etc., like Krogers' always does.

Office Depot: In the regular checkout aisle, the card reader unit gave an email-only receipt option. When I typed my email in, I made a typo (two periods in a row instead of one). It did not automatically correct it nor give a warning. Instead it showed an error message that the email send had failed. It did not give me another chance to correct my entry, nor to get a paper receipt after all. I took a photo of the amounts shown on the screen with my phone, for my records. (I usually do that at Kroger too, just in case.)

A small local store: Had an email receipt option. But the cashier gave me a paper printout too, without asking. The email receipt that I received only listed the total charge, not any details about what I bought nor the individual prices. Therefore, I was glad to have the paper receipt to scan for my records.

Another small local store: Had an email receipt option. Both of the local store email receipts which I received were generated/sent by "Square". However, this store's email receipt did include the purchase details. So it must be configurable by the store, or something.

I keep wondering if receipts nowadays are less likely to use that thermal paper which is coated with so many chemicals, and more likely to be plain paper printed with regular ink. Sometimes I can guess one way or the other based on the look and feel of the paper and ink, but I'm never certain.

I've sometimes wondered why some shopping receipts have smudgy lines of red or pink ink on them.

Answer: It's an end of roll warning stripe.

to mask or not to mask

I'm going clothes shopping for the first time since before 2020.
My last time grocery shopping was mid-May.
My last time in another store was the beginning of June. I wore a face mask that day though I think other people weren't.

According to this page: major retailers' face mask requirements,
it looks like most (or all) stores no longer require fully vaccinated shoppers to wear face masks. Around here that means probably no one, especially non-vaccinated people, will be wearing them.

According to the SC DHEC dashboard, 41% of South Carolinians have been fully vaccinated, and 48% have had at least one dose.

COVID-19 delta variant increasingly spreads in US but SC detection system not finding it (June 23, 2021)
"Because the state does not routinely screen for variants, only four delta cases have been confirmed in the state."

I guess I'll still wear a face mask even if I don't see anyone else wearing one.

..
Addendum: Many, maybe even most of the people I saw in the stores were still wearing face masks. I was pleasantly surprised.

Something I hadn't considered was that the stores might have their fitting rooms closed. Both JCPenny and Kohl's had signs in front of fitting rooms saying they were closed. Perhaps other fitting rooms in the same stores were still open, I'm not sure. I didn't find any clothes that interested me in there anyway.

The shops where you CAN try on clothes as more retailers reopen fitting rooms (2021 June 1)
Why aren’t all the dressing rooms open?(2021 June 9)
Target is reopening fitting rooms after keeping them closed more than a year amid COVID-19 (2021 May 31)

The fitting rooms at Target were open. I found 3 nice pairs of pants there. Though still not as comfortable as my old cargo pants which have started getting holes at the knees. I bought some iron-on patches for them at Walmart.

It's only been 19 years since it came out, but I've finally watched the Lilo and Stitch movie (I'd wanted to for a long time). I enjoyed it.

I know there are several more movies and a TV series - I saw an episode of the latter once. At this rate it will take me decades to watch the rest, if ever.

I went grocery shopping yesterday. When I got home, I realized that all the fruit I bought was orange. Loquats, a papaya, a mango, a satsuma mandarin, apricots.

Happy Dancing Duck

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2020 04:15 am
darkoshi: (Default)
Skimming down my shopping receipt, I see "Hapy Dancing Duck".
"What?! I didn't buy any duck!", exclaim I, and muse whether one of my items rang up as something else.
But it's correct; it's the birthday card with the cute image of a duckling playing in glittery dandelion fuzz.

I got the holiday cards done done and sent out today after all. Even more cards than usual; sent some to Qiao's family too. But with no newsletter-type insert, only a couple photos. I don't expect the cards to get to their destinations before Christmas, although there's a chance the in-state ones may. If I'd had more time, it would have been nice to come up with a poem about the year to include in the cards. But I suppose any such poem would include references that only made sense to myself, so would probably not be a good idea after all. That would be better put here, on my journal.

My lower back remained achy this morning, even after lengthy and repeating stretching. Going shopping, as always, made it worse. It seems lately that whenever I go shopping, I start feeling like I might be coming down with a fever and getting sick. It must be from the lower back pain getting to me, and/or from being exhausted. Once I get home I start to feel better.

I shopped at World Market (Cost Plus), Big Lots, and Kroger.
I had browsed World Market's online store last week; didn't see anything that looked good. I got tired of scrolling and gave up. But in the actual store, I found lots of good stuff. Some food items to give as gifts, and some for myself.

At Big Lots, in the corner of the store by the door to the Employee-only area, I again smelled weed smoke. Strong enough even through my face mask to make me start feeling slightly nauseous. And yet this was a *different* Big Lots store than the one I smelled weed in last time!

At Kroger, I may have set a record for the most-ever items purchased through self-checkout. (But none of the non-self-checkouts were open anyway, so.) The automated kiosk thing stopped me at least 3 times, at about 15, 32, and 64 items, making me wait for an employee to enter their code on it and let me continue.

Also, I think today was the first time ever at the Kroger self-checkout, that the machine *didn't* call for an employee over after I selected the button for using my own bags.

no pretty mask

At Target a few weeks ago, they had a couple of racks near the entrance with cloth face-masks for sale. Not having seen that in a physical store before, I thought it was great and started browsing through them. But all the ones with pretty colors and patterns were for children, child-sized. The ones for adults were bland boring colors.

I saw a school bus drive by today and realized it's been so long since I've seen school buses. Unlike the past, I didn't hear a cacophony of children yelling as it went by. Though I'm not sure if I had the house windows open at the time or not.

My mom stopped by and talked to me on the porch. She had a cloth face mask on which kept slipping down under her nose. So I guess all those people you see on TV and in photos with masks under their noses aren't necessarily, maybe not even mainly, wearing them that way on purpose. Do they sell small clips that people could just snap onto ear loops to make them tighter? Or what else works well for that? On one of mine that was too loose, I sewed the loops tighter. On another I used safety pins. I suppose stapling them might work, if the straps are wide enough.

tension rods

Note to self:
When buying a tension rod, if the label doesn't specifically say "tension", don't get it. It should preferably also say "spring", because while the label for the below brand doesn't say tension, some online ads for it do.

Do NOT get "Kenney" brand "Twist&Fit" rods. They do not have a spring and do not stay in place well.

I already broke the tongs!

They are the metal kind with a spring in the end, but they were closed up with no obvious way to open them*. So I pulled on the ends, applying force, and got them to open a small amount (which would have been good enough). But then I decided that having them open further would be better, so I pulled harder, and the rivet holding it together broke!

I don't know if the label had instructions, but I don't think so. When I got to the checkout counter yesterday (right before the store closing time), the tongs were missing the label with the bar code and price. It was just a small square of cardboard clipped on with a plastic thread, so it might have fallen off somewhere, or maybe it was missing to begin with. I walked back very quickly to get another tong for the cashier to scan, and told her she could give me the one without the label.

I specifically chose those tongs as they were the only ones without plastic or rubber on them. I don't want plastic as it could get scratched up, and wouldn't be good in case I wanted to use the tongs for pulling something out of flames. I don't want rubber as rubber things tend to get sticky as they age around here, due to the humidity.

(That's another thing I wanted to gripe about. Aloe gel-based hand sanitizers leave my hands sticky even after rubbing them a long time. Even after they start feeling dry, they become sticky again when I touch something like my car's steering wheel. And god forbid it rains and I touch something wet - the residue on my hands turns to slime.)

.

It looks like it's about to rain too, and I haven't even showered yet. Not conducive for baggie-buying.
What to do, what to do?!

*Based on one of the online reviews, the tongs have a locking device on the end: "pull up for closing and push down for open"
Damn, so that is how it works. Would have been good to know. I should be able to fix them if I can find something to replace the rivet with, and if I can get the spring to stay in place while trying to re-assemble it.

lift

Today I found out that Batteries+Bulbs takes button batteries, in addition to other batteries, for recycling.

.

I went to Big Lots, expecting there to still to be Halloween decorations & lights available. It's still two weeks away, after all. Instead, they had Christmas stuff. I got a blue LED light strand.

While I was browsing one side of the store, I kept smelling weed even through my face mask. No one was nearby that I could see. I wondered if someone was smoking it in the back of the store, or if someone smelled so strongly of it that it lingered after they'd walked by.

Shopping really gives me a lift sometimes, finding things that look tasty&vegan&organic, or pretty&useful, or just-what-I-needed-or-wanted. I don't get that lift with known brands that I've had before, unless they are something really good and on sale for a great price. It's mostly with items that are new to me, unknowns, surprises. Big Lots is good for that, because I never know what I might find there.

.

I suppose it's best not to give someone else in your household a food or drink you like a lot. It's a repeated anguish seeing it there, unopened, every time you open the refrigerator. You can't have it, because you gave it to *them* as a gift. I need to remind my niece about that bottle of Mama Chia Blackberry Hibiscus, cuz if she don't want it, I *will* drink it.

.

Last week while I was working with the windows open, I kept hearing an unfamiliar whining/buzzing noise. I finally looked outside. It was a flying drone! Up over the area across the street where the erstwhile strip mall is. V-shaped, black, with white on the tips of the wings. It must have had propellers, but was too far away to see them. At one point it went up very high, and made me worry. No planes in the area, but still. What if it lost control and fell?

Come to think of it, I think there's a county sheriff's station in that strip mall now. I wonder if it was law enforcement testing out a new gadget, rather than some random person having fun.
