Qiao has four framed prints of birds (ducks, turkey, etc.) painted by Raymond Stokes Soubeyroux.

They've been hanging on the wall in my current bedroom for at least ten years, I think. I was the one who hung them up there.

One of the four prints depicts a pair of bobwhite quail. The female painted quail looks just like the one I saw in my yard last week (though I had no recollection of the painting then). So it was with surprise and amusement that I noticed it on the wall the other day. If it were not for the word "Quail" written at the bottom of the print catching my eye, I probably still would be oblivious to it.

Why did the Messages app on this phone update itself, changing how all the emojis look? I rarely select to update it due to things like this. But maybe I did unwisely select it last time, sigh. And then a few days later it finally applies the changes.

Now I see (what I suspected before but did not know for sure) that the emojis I send aren't necessarily what the other person receives.

Dang, I sent a picture of a giraffe from the side, showing its long neck. Now my phone shows it as only a picture of a giraffe's head, head-on. Totally NOT equivalent! ::SMH::

Update, later that day:
I didn't change anything, but now the emojis are back to how they were before. Weird.

Yay, it's the weekend, and I finished my work for work before midnight today!

It's been very much Spring here the last couple weeks.
Daffodils are yellow.
Pink magnolia blossoms bloomed but they're already gone and replaced by small light green leaves.
Yellow jessamine is yellow.
Bradford pear blossoms are pungent.
Little fig tree leaves are light green and fuzzy.
I wore knee-shorts today and sat outside working for a while. Can do that for now still as the mosquitos aren't out in force yet.

Catchy headline: Busted Plug Towed Away

I didn't know the giant fire hydrant art installation was called "Busted Plug". I'm saddened to hear it's been moved away... but hopefully it will be put up somewhere else in a good spot.

It had been here since 2001: Busted Plug Plaza, in the same parking lot as the iconic Tunnelvision mural and the haybales mural. I enjoyed seeing it whenever I drove downtown.

Here's a short video showing it from multiple angles: Roadside Buzz - Busted Plug, Columbia, SC
.

This "Ra Obelisk" is an artwork here in town I'd not heard of nor visited before. About the hieroglyphs painted on the sides, the article states:
Some of the symbols translate to the titles of Beatles songs “Here Comes the Sun” and “All You Need is Love.” The artist would not give the meaning to the message on the right side, only saying it was an ancient concept and invited others to try to translate it.

That prompted me to try deciphering the right side. The best I could come up with is this:
Peace | The angels are real | They love you

I am not certain that is the message the artist intended; I didn't find a decipherment of the message posted anywhere on the web. I did find that the artist, Richard Lane, died in 1998. That is mentioned in this booklet: Sarah Leverette : South Carolina lawyer, teacher, mentor, ground breaker.

.

August:
I took a week of vacation.
I watched the Peacemaker series on HBO Max, and enjoyed it. That show has the best title sequence / music.

September:
I got a new phone.
I drove to Myrtle Beach with my mom, for a half-vacation half-work week.

October:
I visited an Arts & Music festival and browsed the art.

I went to the SC Pride Festival and got to see a performance by Sheila E.. A nice thing about these public outdoor events here is how close up you can get to the stage and performers, if you want, compared to a concert with assigned seating.

I got my flu shot and bivalent Covid booster on the same day, one in each arm.

Wyze treasure hunt! It affected me, oddly, remotely. I wish I had time to describe the feels.

Halloween: I put up decorations and lights. I replaced the net fabric from my ghosties with a different fabric less likely to entrap flying insects. The new fabric is thicker and heavier, so I cut it into strips to make it look better. Turned out quite well; I was very pleased. I gave out treats. There were 13 trick-or-treaters.

November:
I early-voted the Friday before; stood in line for an hour. But I was relieved to get it done with.

night of snow

It is our night of snow, snow on the ground and air temps below freezing. Tomorrow is today, will be sun and probably melt. Some might survive in the shadows for a bit longer.

On Wednesday I ordered some things on Amazon. I chose an Amazon Day Delivery of Jan 27 for the ones that had the choice, as I'm in no hurry. An email I got today for one item "Sold by Amazon.com Services LLC" says, "New estimated delivery date: Monday, January 24, 2022 - Friday, March 25, 2022".

So either they'll have it shipped right out to me in a couple of days, or maybe it will take 2 months. Weird.

.

Last year, in a store I came across some hologram artworks, 2-d paintings made into 3-d with holograms. 11 by 16 inches in size. They were neat, and I bought 2 that looked like paintings of southeast Asian goddesses.

Later after doing some searching, I discovered that the artist is Zeng Hao, and the paintings are of Kuan Yin, aka Guan Yin. I wonder if whoever made and sold these posters had permission from the actual artists; I tend to suspect not.

But I wanted to ask if any of you know... is there a special name for 3-d hologram artworks of this kind? The store had others with different kinds of artwork on them. But when I searched online, I didn't find anything like it, possibly due to not using the right search terms.

It also is a problem that photos of holograms don't look like holograms, so when looking at images in search results, I can't tell if the items shown are holographic like the ones I have or not.

dandelion brushes

These dandelion heads growing in my yard looked like they'd make good brushes.

The bottles of red and green ink are practically ancient. A part of the ink had separated out into a thick semi-solid layer inside the bottles.

orange turpentine

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2019 04:51 pm
darkoshi: (Default)
Whew, is it hot outside. Upper 90s, but with the humidity and in the direct sun it feels like in the 100s.

Qiao hired tree cutters to take care of the fallen tree as well as another dead tree that hadn't fallen. They finished it all, including grinding the stumps and removing the debris, in under 5 hours. It's a good thing they started early when it was still overcast and not as hot.

I will need to do some more fence repair before I can let the dogs loose again. But it's too hot now; maybe this evening. Although the forecast says it will still be 90 degrees, feeling like 96, at 9pm.

My mom is going to a free outdoor concert this evening. Phew. Hot, hot, hot.

Apparently Fort Jackson doesn't do their annual 4th of July Torchlight Tattoo and Fireworks anymore*. I didn't go often... I'm not into patriotic stuff, but the cannon blasts and fireworks, and cheering for the states and territories in the union was fun. Except for the parts where I worried that the fireworks would misfire and hurt someone.

I am still doing my work-work for the day. Learning to write JUnit tests, using Mockito. I feel somewhat ambivalent about their usefulness. In my experience, they only test what you already know works, and when they break it's not usually because the code got broken, but rather because the test code or test data became outdated.

Qiao's back yard now smells like my mom's oil paints used to. Or rather, the turpentine she used to clean the paint off the brushes. I like the scent, knowing that it is only pine.

I had a small set of oil paints when I was younger. And a small bottle of orange-scented turpentine. The orange didn't mask the turpentine smell at all; it just morphed it into a different strong overpowering and astringent scent.

Oil paints didn't appeal to me much. Too long to dry. Too hard to clean. Too messy. Not very suited to my style of abstract art. Me, not talented enough to paint realistic images very well. Although one time I copy-painted a portrait of my mom and brother from two photographs, and it turned out fairly well.

Turpentine smell makes me think of the Mediterranean too.

Whaddya know: orange terpene is made from orange trees and can be used as a substitute for turpentine. But I still think that the one I had back then was orange-scented pine turpentine. One made from orange tree extracts would probably have smelled better, like one of those citrus-based cleaners.

..

*A web search shows that 2017's Torchlight Tattoo event was cancelled due to the year-long centennial celebration that finished up that year. 2018's event was cancelled due to the "Victory Week" celebration in June of that year. But nothing at all is mentioned anywhere about it this year, which seems odd to me, considering that per those pages, "The Torchlight Tattoo is typically one of the most popular July Fourth events in the Midlands. Before last year, Fort Jackson hosted July Fourth celebrations each year in recent memory".
Per a family friend, Fort Jackson is not doing the July event at all anymore, instead having fireworks as part of their annual June celebration, the aforementioned "Victory Week".

Kinetic Derby Day

Sunday, April 28th, 2019 01:06 pm
darkoshi: (Default)
The 2nd annual Kinetic Derby Day was held in West Columbia yesterday.

I heard a brief mention of it at the start of the local news last night as Qiao was flipping channels, and looked it up as I hadn't heard of such a thing before.

From above website:
Always wanted to be in the Parade?
Have a Quirky Creative side just fighting to get out?
Need a thrill to stir your inner child?
..
The day begins with the kinetic sculpture parade. Local and regional artists showcase human-powered, handmade floats that use gravity and kinetic energy to move along the parade route. The themes range from flying monsters to bizarre satire. Following the parade, soapbox cars take over the massive hill on Meeting Street to race in adult and children divisions.

I didn't find any videos posted yet of this year's event*, but found some from last year, and similar events in a few other locales. It looks so awesome, like so much fun! Much more so than other parades I've seen. (I seem to be emotional at the moment, as watching them is bringing tears to my eyes today.)

*There are no video clips of it even on the local news sites. I can never understand why the full local news shows aren't made available online after they are aired. The websites usually only have a few assorted clips. If I'd known it wouldn't be online, I'd have told Qiao to flip back to the news so I could watch whatever they were going to show. But I didn't because it was only one of several things mentioned in the "coming up during the next half hour" promo, meaning we might need to sit through 25 minutes of other stuff before getting maybe 30 seconds of what I'd been curious about.

The CD balanced in the middle was the latest addition, with the small ladybug and glass drop riding on it. In the past, the small ladybug was in a different place.

Even more amusing than the clips I've seen about phallic imagery in Bhutan...

South Korea has a family-oriented "Penis Park":

Omg. Large decorative toilet seat stickers?!
"Religious Figure on Grunge Backdrop Idol Meditation Boho Holy Print ...for Young Mens"

At first I thought the design was one of those Greek iconographic images of Jesus.

Well, ok. If someone was particularly bored with a plain-looking or ugly toilet, I could see them using some of the other available patterns/prints. But this one? Actually, I think this is the best of the bunch, especially in amusement value.

It was listed in the Amazon search results for "Dance to a Holy Man", an album by The Silencers, which unfortunately isn't available there in MP3 format. I was looking for their original release of Bulletproof Heart. But it's ok, as a live version is available, from their A Night of Electric Silence album.

SCORPION Safety Harness w/attached 6ft. Tubular Lanyard on back ... Is it just me, or do those product images have a distinctly BDSM appeal? Look at the bulge on that mannequin! The product reviews suggest no such thing.

Witchsona - artists drawing themselves as witches; many many lovely paintings.

I didn't know what "witchsona" nor what "sona" meant. The bottom comments on this reddit page explain that the word "fursona" comes from "persona", as in the furry personification of yourself. So I guess the words evolved from persona to fursona to (whatever)sona or even simply "sona".

I have discovered that the cloth paintings I made a long time ago glow fantastically under UV / black light, due to the fluorescent paints I used.

calendars

Tuesday, December 30th, 2014 10:39 pm

Browsing calendars on Amazon.com, I again started to feel like there must be some conspiracy behind the fact that at least 90% of the people depicted in fantasy art calendars are female, regardless of whether the calendars are marketed towards men or women. This reflects and promotes the sexist notion that females are for looking at, while men are not, and that females have beauty/mystery/allure, while men do not.

But again, the calendars on DeviantArt provided some relief.

This one by Mavrosh Stratiotis has many intriguing male fantasy characters.

This one by Apofiss has very cute cats (and a few owls). I got one of his calendars last year. They are so so cute; who can resist?

Journey Through Time is a calendar by Titia van Beugen. She has made some of the most gorgeous fractal images I've ever seen. But she hadn't posted anything since 2009. So I did a search and found that Titia passed away in early 2010 from breast cancer. That is why the above page still has the calendar labeled for 2010. However, DeviantArt always prints the calendar pages for the current/coming year, so it can still be bought.

Other calendars that impressed me:

Beyond Dreams by AquaSixio (Cyril Rolando).
An ethereal, dreamy calendar by RHADS (Artyom).
Calendar 2015 by BaxiaArt (Barbara Florczyk).
SciFi Calendar 2015 by ErikShoemaker.
