The nest is on an artificial nesting platform on the roof of a tower in Bad Salzungen's saltwater spa. The metal platform was installed in 2011, though prior to that it had a wood platform. The webcam was added in 2012.

It is normal that not every egg will result in a fledgling stork. Breeding success depends on the fertilization of the eggs, the prevailing weather conditions during the nestling period, the availability of food in the meadows within a 5-kilometer radius, and—potentially—losses sustained during territorial battles with intruding storks. In this particular nest, between 2011 and 2025—a span of 16 years—a total of 21 young storks successfully fledged; typically, there were two fledglings per season, though on several occasions, not a single young bird survived to fledging. On average, these breeding attempts yielded only 1.3 surviving offspring. In 20% of these breeding attempts, there was no success—meaning no offspring survived. Our storks are free-living wild birds. Consequently, we do not intervene in the natural course of events, even in tragic situations. To date, both breeding partners have fulfilled their parental duties in an exemplary manner. We will follow the unfolding events in this stork nursery with great anticipation and wish the storks continued breeding success and healthy fledglings.
