beware the oven's self cleaning cycle
Thursday, December 17th, 2015 01:17 amLast weekend I used my oven's self-cleaning cycle for maybe the 2nd time ever. Before doing so, I came across an article, Why You Should (Almost) Never Use Your Oven's Self-Cleaning Function, which indicated that the high temperatures used in the cleaning cycle are known to often cause problems.
The article indicated that this was mostly a problem for newer ovens which have hidden heating elements. My oven's heating elements are exposed, so I didn't think the warning was applicable to me. I ran a 3 hour cleaning cycle. The next day I used the oven for baking and it worked fine.
Today however, I wanted to broil some pizza slices, and the broil button is not working. Instead of bringing up the broil settings, it brings up the auto clean settings!! Clicking the auto clean button brings up nothing. So now I can't broil. Apparently fixing it might require a new control panel. But at least the main purpose of the oven, baking, still works.
"The elements and the oven just get so hot — much, much hotter than the 350° to 500° range of normal baking — that sometimes fuses pop and control panels burn out."
