This one was on my right forefinger, and I'm right-handed... and it was in an awkward position. If it were in my left hand, I might have been able to dig it out with just the needle.
My mom once got some tiny cactus barbs stuck in her thumb and wasn't able to get them all out. I guess they healed over, but she ended up with little hard spots in the thumb which continued bothering her for a long while. So I always try to get splinters out as soon as possible to avoid something like that.
Wow, a quarter inch is quite big. That would have driven me nuts.
