I'm not certain now if the smell I associate with propane is correct. I was under the impression that we used propane gas lanterns (and cooking equipment) for camping when I was young (and that is the smell I remember). But maybe it was kerosene or something else.
From what I read, there are several different odorants that can be added to odorless gasses, so that might account for the difference too.
