Another thing that might help...

When dogs are hungry/starved for any period of time, their digestive system gets messed up. It is basically impossible to potty train them until their stomachs get settled, which can take a few weeks.

IF the puppy is:

in a small enough crate (just big enough to stand up and turn around)
with no blanket (soft materials encourage elimination)
is being taken out often enough, (every numbers of months age x 1 hour, so right now your guy needs to go out every three hours and once at night)
is being taken out on a leash so that you SEE him go
is getting a bit of play/cuddle time whenever he's let out of the crate
is being fed on a schedule (3x a day, last meal no later than 5pm)
and watered only at meal time

AND you are still having problems with accidents in the crate, then it is probably due to an upset stomach. Feed him as much canned pumpkin puree as he wants to eat in one sitting until you've given him a whole can(NOT pumpkin pie filling, just plain pumpkin puree) and get him some puppy wormer. That will have him straight in a week, but it might get worse before it gets better.
