I'm surprised how good the film quality and special effects were in this Flash Gordon serial film from 1936:

A local station was showing it on TV (WACH Comet TV) tonight, and I'd have guessed it was from the 1950s, not the 1930s. In particular, there are several clips that include a display screen (like a TV) built into the wall, and it is shown playing video, like a security camera. For example, in the above YouTube video, at 0:29:45. They didn't have television back then, so how could they have done that? I guess they must have projected a movie onto the screen, so it's a movie of a movie.

Actually, I was also surprised that the Flash Gordon concept was so old; I didn't realize that it predated the 1980 movie. It also reminded me that I have the novelization of that 1980 movie, which I bought after reading these tweets, and that I have yet to read it.

But now I also want to rewatch the 1980 movie. I don't remember it being so brightly colored and awesomely amusing:
