Generally, when I hold my finger on a link in the default browser, it will display a menu with several entries, including one for opening the link in a new window.

Sometimes when I hold my finger on a link (why? what am I doing differently?), it instead displays a "Copy / Quick Lookup / Save via" popup window, along with start/end selection markers. I can click the "back" button to get rid of the popup window and selection markers. But once this has happened, how do I get back the menu for opening the link in a new window? If I try holding my finger on the link again, it keeps bringing back the "Copy / Quick Lookup / Save via" window.

That's the context menu you get for plain text. It must think that you've selected some text rather than a URL. Possibly you've selected a chunk of the URL, or something like that?

You could hit refresh, that might work.

Refreshing doesn't make a difference. I now have realized that links which are coded by Javascript rather than using an HREF tag always bring up the text selection menu. That makes sense, and it's similar to what happens on a PC browser. It was confusing for me though, because...

For HREF links, I sometimes get the link context menu, and other times get the text selection menu. For this scenario, it seems to depend whether I'm touching the middle of a word versus a blank space between words. Zooming the page can help with this.

I'll soon be installing some other mobile browsers anyway, to see which one I like best.
