I remembered another thing I wanted to post about! I found a better utility program for increasing my screen's brightness than the one I was using before. This one lets you set up customized gamma/brightness/contrast levels and assign hotkeys to them. So I put the program in my startup folder, and now whenever I want to temporarily increase my screen's brightness, in order to view photos or vids, I can just press Shift-F1, and to get it back to normal, Ctrl-F1.

The program is named "Gamma Panel":

It would be even niftier if I could find a program similar to this, but which would only change the brightness in a sizeable rectangle on the screen which I could move around with my mouse, similar to the magnification function the mouse software came with. Then I could just position the rectangle over the particular image or video I want to see brighter, without being lambasted by bright light from the entire screen.
