I just saw it! Thank you. Still fascinated by the mystery origins of the triangle and what kind of tree that is (I'm suspecting the peeling-bark kind, but I also suspect I'm wrong about that, but regardless, maybe a beech or a birch (link).
Also, totally O/T, your dogs, OMG. They remind me of Stuie and my other cats, always trying to find a way out (though their forays into such madness are always indoors, in trying to somehow rip or beat the doors off their frames so they can "escape" the very room with all the food, water, and kitty litter in it). Cats, gotta love'em.
I went out to take another look at the tree, and I'm pretty sure it's a wild cherry. The triangle formations only seem to be where smaller branches started growing out - they aren't apparent on the large limbs higher up. There's a smaller wild cherry tree by the front porch, and it has the same triangle formations, but fewer of them and not as symmetrical.
A Google Image search of "wild cherry tree bark" returns several images with similar bark but without the triangles, so maybe my tree is special :)
Now I feel it's my duty to upload another image, so I'll add it above.
It's not special (unless you count the same kind of tree being in NY as "special"). I just remembered where I last saw it. I used to stick my fingers in those triangles growing up on Long Island. The apartment complex I spent most of my time at was all planted out in cherry trees across the front lawns. Every spring I used to...wow, this just made me so wistful. Thanks for posting those pictures. :)
