I made myself a rope flogger a few years ago, and when I was making it, I thought the rope I had gotten for it wasn't a very good choice. The rope has a solid core, making it somewhat stiff, and a slippery braided outer sheath which caused the knots to come undone easily. I eventually had to sew the end knots with thread to keep them from unravelling.
So I thought that a braided rope without the solid core would surely be better. But since then, I've made a couple other floggers with other rope like that, and they don't feel as good. Using my original flogger on myself, it's like an invigorating massage. It has this special SNAP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP that feels very nice. The others are similar, but you have to swing them harder to get the same force of impact, and even then, they still don't feel quite the same. I guess the stiffness of the original rope is actually a good thing, and the solid core seems to make it heavier and more powerful than other similarly sized rope.
Note to self: Rope with solid core = Braided Nylon. 100% mixed fibers: Nylon, Polyester. 5/16". Working load limit 192 lb.
Hmmm... interesting observation. I noticed that my original flogger has the knots closer to the ends of the rope. So on the most recent flogger I made, I've just now cut its ends shorter so there's less fluffy unravelled rope after the knots, and that makes the impact feel quite a bit better. Still not quite the same as the original, but closer.
