I did finally get a Tdap vaccine shot on Wednesday.

Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Whooping Cough Vaccination: What Everyone Should Know

- DT (generic) and Td (Tenivac® and generic) provide protection against diphtheria and tetanus.
- DTaP (Daptacel®, Infanrix®, Kinrix®, Pediarix®, Pentacel®, Quadracel®, and Vaxelis™) provides protection against diphtheria, tetanus, and whooping cough.
- Tdap (Adacel® and Boostrix®) provides protection against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough.

Upper-case letters in these abbreviations mean the vaccine has full-strength doses of that part of the vaccine. The lower-case “d” and “p” in Td and Tdap means these vaccines use smaller doses of diphtheria and whooping cough. The “a” in DTaP and Tdap stands for “acellular,” meaning that the whooping cough component contains only parts of the bacteria instead of the whole bacteria.

..
Studies estimate that diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccines protect nearly all people (95 in 100) for approximately 10 years. Protection decreases over time, so adults need to get a Td or Tdap booster shot every 10 years to stay protected.
..
Studies estimate that tetanus toxoid-containing vaccines protect essentially all people for approximately 10 years. Protection decreases over time, so adults need to get a Td or Tdap booster shot every 10 years to stay protected.
..
In studies showing how well the whooping cough component works, Tdap fully protects:
- About 7 in 10 people in the first year after getting it.
- About 3 or 4 in 10 people four years after getting it.

Wow. I don't think I have all my shots.

(Which is hardly surprising. Some of these vaccines didn't exist when I was a kid.)

I don't fully understand the tables since I don't see where it says "boosters only needed" at [age] so my question is, what if you don't have and/or don't know how to get your childhood immunization records? If you don't really know what initial shots and boosters you've had then how do you know, based on that table, which ones to get?

ETA: Oh, I see it now - right under the table it says: "Administer recommended vaccines if vaccination history is incomplete or unknown." I mean, I know I had the measles shot? Probably rubella and diphtheria, not sure about the rest? Which means someone like me would basically have to get *all the shots*, Jesus.

I mean yeah, I just don't know exactly what I've had. I was immunized before (or "by"; I was born in February; school starts in September in NY) age 5 for school, so by 1976. There have been new immunizations added since then, so I'm assuming at least some of them I never got.

OK, thanks for those links. The second one at chop.edu tells me that assuming all my vaccinations went to schedule I'm only missing Hib (what even is that?) and Hepatitis B. I didn't have any insurance by the time those shots were added to the vaccine schedules so chances are I still need them.

(Also, I'm surprised tetanus is even on there though I guess that's a good thing. Tetanus shots used to need redoing every few years if I recall right. Now I think it's once every 10 years (?) which is a lot better.)

Catching up on vaccines is not top of my mind right now anyhow, considering lack of insurance and other priorities and assuming they're not free and/or neither is the office visit(s) required to get them.

Should any of that change, though - yeah, definitely keeping it in mind now (probably never would've crossed my mind without your post on it).
