obnoxious ad

On the iPad, which I mainly use to play Words With Friends, I generally have 2 browser pages opened to 2 dictionary websites, for checking if words I'm considering using are really words or not. And for checking definitions.

Today, the Merriam-Webster site has an ad-banner across the top, "Would You FUCK an Older Woman?" with FUCK highlighted in red, and Older Woman underlined. Apparently it is an AdultFriendFinder ad, it having their logo in the corner. Not only that, but the banner itself is moving around in jerky manner in order to grab your attention.

Somehow, this surprises me. I suppose this must have slipped by the people in charge of the web site. Surely they wouldn't have allowed an ad like that knowingly, it being a dictionary website which one would expect kids to use too, and how easily offended some people are by the word "fuck".

Ah. There are now "Adult Content Settings" on the LJ Journal Settings page. This lets you flag your own journal as having adult concepts and/or explicit adult content. There is also a "Flag" link on certain people's posts and journals, but not on others... it seems to depend on the journal's style. But apparently that is where someone else could flag your posts as being adult.

Ah. There is also an "Adult Content" dropdown on the "Post an Entry" page. Perhaps that explains why certain people's posts on my friends page were filtered as being adult. Perhaps they flagged them that way themselves.

The Settings page also lets you set whether or not your search results are filtered; it defaults to moderate filtering. But even if you set it to not filter, it apparently still does filter things: it returns no results for "spices" even though this community has it as one of its interests. I didn't even know what the term spic meant before I read about it being filtered, and therefore looked it up.

I did not have my birth-date entered on my LJ Profile.
A week or so ago, I started seeing some posts on my friends-list replaced by links like these:

( You are about to view content that may not be appropriate for minors. )

( You are about to view content that may only be appropriate for adults. )

When clicking the first style of link, I would get a page saying this:
14
Adult Content Notice
The content that you are about to view could contain adult concepts which may not be suitable for minors. To continue, you must confirm that you are at least 14 years of age. Edit your profile to register your age.

When clicking the 2nd style of link, I would get a page saying this:
18
Adult Content Notice
The content that you are about to view may contain material only suitable for adults. To continue, you must confirm that you are at least 18 years of age. Edit your profile to register your age.

Both pages had a button you could click to confirm your age, without updating your profile.

But now I have updated my profile, so I no longer see the above while logged in.

I have not been able to figure out what basis is used to determine which posts are filtered as above, and which not. Some harmless posts are filtered, but not all of a person's posts are.

I wonder if any of my posts will get filtered like that, or if any already have been without me realizing it.

Yahoo Groups

I found out 2 things about Yahoo Groups today.

First, that the Edit Profile page that gets displayed in the UK (and probably other countries) differs from the one displayed in the U.S. The one in the U.S. has 2 additional checkboxes in the "Display Options" area. One of them is labeled "Adult-oriented Content?" and has the text Designate this profile as an 'adult profile'.
- Adult-oriented content is permitted
- Users registered as under age 18 won't be able to view this profile

The other is labeled "Member Since" and has the text:
Display how long I have been a member of Yahoo! on my profiles

Apparently those 2 options are not available in the UK. It was the first one which concerned me, as I am moderator of a group, and one member of the group has a nude photo on their profile, and links to some adult sites. I asked them to update their profile to select that checkbox, just so the unpredictable Yahoo wouldn't have that as a reason for shutting down our group. But apparently he can't do that, since he doesn't even have that option.

Second, I've known for a while that if you do a group search from the main page after logging into Yahoo groups, any groups in the adult category will not appear in the search results. However, today I found out that if you are a member of an adult group, and you do the search from that group's main page, adult groups are included in the search results.
