It's near freezing outside, and the sun is setting. I wanted to put Zorro in the garage where it is warmer. If I go inside the garage, she follows me in. But it is always a struggle getting her to stay inside when I leave. She either stands in front of the door so that she can get out ahead of me, or she tries to push her way outside with me. I have to physically block and/or hold her back while I'm squeezing myself thru the door, and then quickly shut it, to keep her inside.

Should I be forcing her to stay inside in cold weather? Or should I just let her go and stay outside, since that is what she seems to want? She's pretty good about not trying to force her way into the house with me.... if we leave the house door wide open, she'll take advantage and run inside, but otherwise she seems to know she isn't allowed inside the house, and doesn't try to sneak in with us. So surely she knows that if she leaves the garage with me, she will be stuck outside in the cold, right? So if she keeps trying to get out of the garage, then she must prefer being outside in spite of the cold, right? Or does she maybe have separation anxiety, and hates being shut inside the garage alone, and that overrides her better sense about the temperature?

If she doesn't even mind being outside in freezing temperatures, is there any point in turning on the radiator inside the garage when I force her to stay in there?

The forecast is for a low of 20 degrees F overnight (-7 degrees C). Ooooh... we have a slight chance of snow on Friday!

Tomorrow the forecast is for sunny with a high of 36 to 43 degrees, depending on which source I check. Should I keep her in the garage tomorrow while I'm at work, or should I leave her outside? It's usually fairly temperate on the front porch in the late morning and early afternoon even on cold but sunny days, since it is sheltered on 2 sides and gets full sunshine.

For now, force her in the garage and turn the radiator on if its going to be below 40 degrees.

If she's going to be an outside dog she needs a dog house. If you winterproof a dog house its just fine for them to stay out there even when it is freezing.

This link has all the info you need, starting with the "Outdoor Housing" section.
