Friday, January 26th, 2007 07:34 pmThere's a grey heron-like bird that I sometimes see down near the pond at my work. Yesterday morning when I was driving in, I saw it standing in a shallow part of the pond, in an elegant pose that would have made a nice photo. This morning I saw it in the same place again, in a different position, more hunched together and pointing its body downward as if about to strike, but still beautifully elegant.
Then around noon as I walked down to the pond for my lunch, I was surprised to see it in a place I've never seen it before - standing on top of one of the picnic tables near the water. Sitting down at my own usual table a little ways away, I watched it unobtrusively for a while, pleased that it hadn't been scared off by my presence. Eventually some other people came along and it flew away, up to a tree branch.
