storage of nuts

Note to self:

Always store pecans and walnuts in the refrigerator or the freezer. They get unpleasantly stale otherwise.

Do the same for sunflower seeds, peanuts, hazelnuts, and macadamias, unless consumed within a month or so of getting them.

Almonds, pistachios, and cashews seem to keep well without being refrigerated (although the latter 2 absorb moisture and become less crisp over time).

olluco root

I came across a new-to-me vegetable/tuber. Ulluco roots. The grocery store had a few frozen bags of them.

The ulluco is one of the most widely grown and economically important root crops in the Andean region of South America, second only to the potato. It is known there with the common name of papa lisa, but also by the regional names melloco (Ecuador), olluco (Peru), chugua (Colombia) or ruba (Venezuela), among others. The leaf and the tuber are edible, similar to spinach and the potato, respectively.

For Vegans & Vegetarians! “Forgotten” Vegetables 1~24 - this page has info on many unusual tubers and vegetables - I was only familar with a few of them. They all look so interesting.
