I am wondering whether to get a "bagless" or "bagged" vacuum cleaner. Until now I've only used the bagged kinds. If anyone reading this has experience with any of the recent bagless models, I'd be interested in your opinion on them. How messy is cleaning out the dirt compared to changing a bag? How often does the filter need to be replaced or cleaned? Does anyone know of a model available in the U.S. which has a filter which can be cleaned instead of needing to be replaced?

I had a bagless once. It was horribly messy to dispose of the dirt. I would take out the dirt container and micro dust would just start pouffing out of that thing, into the air. I could never get all of the filth into the garbage, either. A lot of the hair always seemed to get caught in the container and it was just so awful. I have asthma, too, so everytime I had to empty that thing I knew I'd be in for an attack. I ended up throwing the whole business away and getting a bagged vacuum cleaner, which I like SOOOOOOO much more.

I love my bagless (dyson) vacuum cleaner. Emptying it out seems about as dusty as changing a bag on other vacuums to me, no more so. The cleaning power is ace. Officially the filter needs rinsing out twice a year, but I find it better to do it every 2-4 months.
