Why is it so hard to make myself go to bed on time?

Last year, when I was working from home a lot, I was getting nearly 8 hours sleep on a lot of nights. 8 hours of sleep is my goal; and I seem to do well on that amount. Even when I went to bed late, I was able to compensate by getting up later, while still managing to start work at a reasonable time. I'm not sure if I could have kept that up on a continuous basis, as there was a long-term trend of me staying up later and later.

This year so far, I've only worked from home one day. All the other days, I've been going to the office. But I'd guess that I've gotten less than 7 hours sleep per night on average.

Take last night. I determined what time I'd need to start getting ready for bed, in order to get 8 hours sleep. About twenty minutes before that time, while sitting at my computer, I thought to myself "I can make it to bed on time tonight. There's nothing urgent or pressing that I still need to do."

But the appointed time came and passed, and I didn't shut off the computer until an hour later. I hadn't found anything urgent or pressing to do, and yet I still couldn't bring myself to shut down the computer and go to bed, until I knew I was already an hour late.

Why?

.

A positive side of going in to the office every day is that it seems to help with my back pain. I get to walk more, both walking to and from the parking lot, as well as walking outside at lunchtime. My back hasn't been bothering me much this year so far.

That sounds just like me. I also strive for 8 hours, but I get in these patterns of staying up really late too..I've been especially bad about it lately.. and I've been sooo tired. Though I feel like even with 8 I'm tired, but not quite as badly. I actually feel like my body wants like 10 hours, but it sure can't get that on "school nights".

I hate how I never know how much is normal tiredness, and how much is more...something physical or psychological adding to it.

Walking is good for back pain. So is running. My back pain goes away when I run.
