Soo...what does a carnival have to do with Lent? Was it a celebration put on during Lent originally? I thought Lent is about taking away enjoyable things though, not adding them..
The tradition from how I understand it, is to have celebrations and to eat rich foods right before Lent (ie. Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras/Carnival), knowing that one won't be able to do so during Lent (if that's one's religion). I came across another name for it today - "Shrove Tuesday" aka "Pancake Tuesday".
