I picked at the skin with a needle. And tweezers. I sucked on it. I rubbed soap on it and washed it off. I did something else for an hour. I picked at it with the needle and tweezers some more. I could see the splinter quite distinctly at this point, but it still wasn't sticking out for me to be able to get it with the tweezer.

I spit on it. I squeezed the area around it with my other hand, trying to push it out from the bottom. It came out!

..

I worry how I'm going to be able to get splinters out when I'm older and my eyesight isn't as good. Over the years, I've read many suggestions and remedies. But I always have a hard time remembering what has worked for me personally, besides picking at it with a needle. So I'm going to try to remember to write down what works, each time it happens.

The last (wood) splinter I got was a month ago in my left thumb and I'm left-handed so after dropping a few apparently-too-feeble-to-be-worthy-of-notice hints around my SO, I just left it in there. It was about 1/4 of an inch long and hurt like hell until maybe 3-4 days ago (still hurts just for a second when I rub it now; I can still feel where it is) but eventually the body will simply absorb stuff like that. I've also absorbed two pencil points in my leg over the years and probably still have some coinage from my childhood kicking around the old gastro tract. I don't really give a crap. That said, you bring up a lot of good points, since splinters aren't the most comfortable things to not be able to remove.
