school fees

I didn't realize that some public schools in the U.S. charge parents mandatory fees for each student. It seems to be common in Illinois. Up to $500 or more per student per year, although they are supposedly waived for low income families.

From what I remember of my own school years, there may have been various fees, but I think they were mainly for "optional" things like field trips, after-school activities, school photos & yearbook.

Here in good ol' Illinois, there are all sorts of added fees and taxes for things.

I didn't realize you were in Illinois now! I keep mixing up Illinois and Ohio in my mind. My niece plans to go back to Ohio next year, which is why I was looking up about book fees, based on a comment my sister made. But I was also forgetting that my niece will be in college next year rather than high school. Don't know about my brain, sometimes.

I confused things because, yes, I am technically in Illinois right at this moment, and I grew up in Illinois, but I'm just visiting my family for a couple weeks now after coming back from SE Asia, before returning to Maine in a week and a half. But no, I never lived in Ohio. Lol.
