A look at his wiki shows that he was just 21 when he had his first hit single with Culture Club. I'm guessing his voice was not fully matured yet (men take up until age 25 to fully mature, which I'm speculating might've affected his voice too, which sounds much deeper now live and a little rougher, the latter which might be the effects of vocal nodules, smoking and/or drinking).

So yeah, if that's not just off nights he was having in the videos I'm watching right now, then his voice has changed a lot and no way will I enjoy a new album as much considering that.

There's always hope, though, that maybe he's just not (consistently) all that good live. Some artists simply aren't; their success is more a matter of endless studio retakes and careful editing and voice layering than from having a consistently good voice (of course, I'm thinking of Mariah Carey when I say this - by her own admission she can't always sing because there are days her voice just isn't up to it).

She also claims the cold kills her voice, as well as lack of humidity. She also has vocal nodes that she's had to "sing through" (or in spite of) since she was too young to recall. She makes it sound like she's lucky she could ever sing at all, which I tend to think is probably the truth because my own voice has always seemed to come and go as it pleases (not that it's anything like hers, but once in a while I guess it has its moments).

When it's good it's great but the rest of the time, it's really not.
Edited (I meant to say he was 21 in 1982 but somehow that got lost in the translation) Date: 2014-12-30 07:11 am (UTC)

Have you heard this one?

Just found it; it's from only a year or so ago and he sounds amazing, even with most of the vocal changes I picked up in other videos present in this performance, too.

OK, so I was pretty close when I guessed it might be vocal nodes or nodules affecting his voice (for all I know nodes, nodules and polyps are exactly the same thing when they're on vocal cords so I really need to look that up someday to see what the differences might be).

We can only hope he sounds as good as he did in that one video once the album comes out, I guess...
