Yes, this is a bad time of year for squirrels. Their hoards are used up, and they're forced to try to subsist off of blossoms and buds, foods which are about as digestible to them as blades of grass are to us. I try to make squirrel chow for them - peanut butter and bacon grease or coconut oil mixed together with sugar and cornmeal (and almond meal if I can afford it) and roasted finely ground eggshells, and then rolled up with birdseed. I put it out with mixed nuts (not just peanuts and sunflower seeds, which aren't nutritionally complete!) in small portions far away from my own home.
Of course, they also like fresh and dried fruit as a nice treat!
That is nice of you to do for them. I think the weather is mild enough here in South Carolina that the ones here are probably not that desperate, but I don't really know.
