cats, snakes

I look out the window and see a little gray cat lying comfortably there in the dirt next to the azalea bush. How out of place cats seem, soft and cuddly and clean, in a cold hard world. It rolls over, stretches, gets up and walks on, no speck of dirt visible on it.

.

Tuesday night, Qiao's garage floodlight cam sent a "pet detected" notification to my phone. I was very surprised to see a black cat carefully toying with a snake. I went outside; the cat ran off. The snake was crinkled up like I've seen once before with a snake on the back patio, though in a curled position this time. So it was probably a non-dangerous "rat snake":

https://tulsaworld.com/rat-snakes-sometimes-freeze-with-kinked-posture/article_763dea4d-93e5-5e64-ab51-43256048e2fd.html
“When frightened, they often assume a ‘kinked’ posture and remain motionless,” noted the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory. The posture makes it appear wrinkled.

https://backyardwildlifeconnection.com/2018/09/29/rat-snake-found-kinking-in-backyard/
The black rat snake is one of several snakes that assume this bizarre posture. When threatened, rat snakes sometimes don this folded or braided pose as a form of camouflage. Supposedly, to a potential predator, a kinked snake looks like nothing more than a stick, and will pass on by without attacking the motionless reptile.

This reddit shows a cool video of a landslide with trees sliding and tumbling down a mountainside: I see movement ahead

It is from 2004: Massive landslide in Japan, recorded on video!

YouTube has a more complete video of it with sound.

(It reminded me of the video of trees on the march linked to here.)

Here's the funniest/cutest Cat video I've seen all week (says a person who doesn't regularly watch such videos, as otherwise I'd never get anything done).

And here's a funny/cute dog video: Family Tries To Convince Their Giant Alaskan Malamute To Get In The Bath

I'm back to watching the Olympics opening ceremony. That was in one of the commercial breaks. It caught my eye enough that I stopped fast-forwarding thru the commercials and backed up to watch it.

I'm also back to cringing internally when seeing people on TV not wearing their face masks properly, or wearing ones that aren't fitted properly to them. So many masks slipping below noses. Quite a few purposely pushed down.

The male Iraqi flag bearer was wearing a face mask but the female flag bearer was smiling broadly without a face covering. What's up with that? My web search didn't find an answer on her masklessness, but instead found this:
Mask-shy Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan rain on COVID-compliant opening parade

The way they have the stadium seats randomly covered in different colors sure makes a good imitation (from a distance) of the stands being filled with people.

.

Oh gosh, this cat commercial is good too :D

flares of bright green growing ever larger
on the tips of the fig tree branches

bright yellows along the fence
and in the flower beds

i do not want to speak of the stray black cat
found dead under the wisteria bush
outside the fence
as i returned from my walk last week

the sky was colorful from the setting sun
the trees in the median were blooming white
the air smelled of pollen
as i walked, enjoying it,
and i planned to walk further
before I noticed that something black by the bush.

This game looks like one I might enjoy.

Per a FAQ posted today on the Patreon page:
Peace Island is a game that is still in development. While there will probably be at least two more alphas, we are not scheduling a beta release, for at least three months. We anticipate being able to release the full game one year later. In the meantime, you will gain access to the aforementioned alphas, as a contributor to the project. In these alphas, you will be able to explore the lion's share of the exterior game world, and watch the project's progress, as we integrate more and more game mechanics, animations, and features.

cattavorting

Yesterday when looking through the motion-activated clips from the video cams, I was a bit surprised to see what looked like the same white pick-up truck driving by several times in a row.

Today I was surprised to see six.. SIX!!! cats cavorting in my front yard. The last couple of weeks, I'd been smelling cat urine outside the front & side & garage doors. I'd also heard a cat yowling at night. But I'd thought it was a single cat. SIX!!! Although it may be a single female cat, being following around by all the male cats in the neighborhood.

Yesterday, I'd considered calling the county's Animal Care number to ask about their trap-neuter-return program. But that's when I thought there was one cat. How the heck would you catch 6 cats, or if only one, the right one?

There's an "End Road Work" sign across the street which was put up months ago and is still there, even though no road work has been done. At first the sign was taped over with black plastic, but that has since blown away. I suppose they were planning to do some roadwork originally, but it must have been delayed.

Someone put up a small new sign underneath it. I squinted at it through my window to see what it says. "Cats in the Bushes" ?

I looked again. "Cash for Houses"

Hmm. The first version was more interesting.

poor critters

I was taking the puppy out for a short walk, and heard a loud meowing from down the street. It's a fluffy black kitten, sitting by one of the trees in the median. Poor thing. But I've learned my lesson. No more rescuing poor little critters. Especially not when they aren't even wailing at me from within my own yard.

Hmm. And at least the puppy might scare this one away from the notion of wandering into my yard.

Since people have been posting kitten pix, it made me want to post one of Juniper-kitty:

That was one of the very few I managed to take, where she wasn't a moving blur. She's still getting along well with the puppy-dog, last I heard.

I'm so tired and busy, that by the time I have time to write in my journal, it no longer seems important to do so.

I came home, wanting to mow (whack?) my grass. (I use a weed-wacker.) I was looking forward to cutting the grass, so that when it started raining, I was disappointed. Isn't that weird? It's not that I truly enjoy cutting grass, but I want to make my yard look good. I don't want to contribute to making the neighborhood look bad by having an unkempt-looking yard. Even though personally, I prefer wild-growing grass to short-shorn grass, it now bothers me, not having my grass short.

I got Forestfen a good deal on DSL, to replace the previous account I had at her house. It's only $10 a month, with a 12-month term agreement. It's the "lite" DSL, but I think it is fast enough for her purposes. Wish I could have gotten a deal like that at my new house (I'm paying 3 times as much, and it will go up to 4x as much later on), but it's not available here.

Yesterday and today at work, I wrote myself a webpage with javascript for converting byte-arrays of EBCDIC codes in signed-integer format to ASCII. The Eclipse debugger displays the byte-arrays as signed numbers, and since most EBCDIC tables only include unsigned-integer or hex codes, it was difficult to decipher them. Now I just have to copy & paste & click a button. If I had a lot of free time, I could try coding an Eclipse plugin to do it automatically within the debugger.

Maybe I should download Eclipse to my home computer. I was playing with one of my old audio programs yesterday, and it was having problems. I could re-code it in Java.... but that would take time and effort, which I need to spend on other things for now.

Like mowing grass. And figuring out how to get tile layed down in my washer-dryer area. And getting a washer & dryer. And getting electrical stuff done. And paint. And plumbing. And towel racks. I'm beginning to think I might not get some of this stuff done this year. Maybe I ought to just let things be and relax.

It looks like Forestfen may have found a home for the kitten. A friend of hers was considering getting another dog as a companion for his 9-month old Scottish terrier, and when FF suggested the kitten instead, he said we could try it out and see if they get along. So we took the kitten there, and at first I was quite dubious about the kitten not being terrified of the dog, since the dog kept trying to jump up on us. But they seem to actually get along ok. The dog wants to play with the kitten, and the kitten seems curious about the dog. When the kitten gets tired of being chased by the dog, it goes somewhere the dog can't get to, and then comes back out a little while later to do more exploring. The kitten even started eating and drinking from the dog's food and water bowls, and the dog didn't seem to mind. So we left it there yesterday, and hopefully it has a new home where it will be happy. We went to go buy some catfood, and when we returned, the kitten was sleeping on top of the chair the guy was in, and he said it had been purring on his chest before too.

I do miss the kitten a bit (the cute little soft purring playful thing), but I'm sure I'll get over that soon. Now I can use my computer again, without a kitten jumping on my keyboard all the time.

I am crying, and there is no reason for it. I just feel unaccountably sad of a sudden.

Or maybe there's a reason, and it just isn't clear to me.

Even if I find a person or shelter to take the kitten, I know that just means one less home for some other cat or kitten somewhere, and that some other one will end up being euthanized instead of this one.

But I don't think that is why I feel like crying.

I don't know why I'm doing all this.

There was a squirrel in the bird-feeder.

It's a holiday. Pretty quiet so far.

Grass is growing.

Trying to do exercises while a kitten is around becomes more of an effort to dodge the kitty.

There's a cabinet in the sunroom it likes to go under, through an opening in the back where I'd have to move the cabinet in order to get to it. It can already climb the brick wall behind the cabinet, by keeping its back against the cabinet as it climbs.

Oh gosh. The shelter isn't taking any kittens for the next 10 days because they had a sick one and have to disinfect.

I want to let the kitten in my house. It seems so lonely. I was able to pet it earlier this morning. Should I let it inside? I guess I have to, right? Can't just leave it out there for 10 days, right?

Oh gosh. Then I would need a litter box. As well as the container of vegekit nutrient powder at Forestfen's. I wonder if that stuff is still potent; it is so old.

(Wow, the restore-from-draft feature actually worked this time, after my browser locked up.)

Well. I still have a mewing kitten in my bushes. I broke down and gave it some rice with soymilk, since it must have been hungry all day without having eaten. Forestfen was over, and discovered that it will come towards you if you mew at it in a high pitch, even though it is shy.

If it is still here tomorrow evening, maybe we'll have to take it to the shelter.

There's a kitten under the juniper bushes inside my fence. It started mewing loudly when I walked by. I don't see any other kittens or a momma-cat around.

Must resist the urge to coax the kitten out of hiding and pet it and pick it up and feed it. I don't want to have a cat, as cute as they are. I already put a bowl of water down for it, just in case it is dying of thirst.

Hopefully it just wandered away from its owner or parent-cat and will soon find its way back. I wouldn't want to take it to a shelter and then find out a neighbor is looking for it.
