Are tulip tree flower buds edible?

(Went out to check the mail; picked up some branches that had fallen in today's strong wind; found one with a pretty unopened flower bud...)

With a few of the petals pulled open:

I didn't find any indication that they are edible, but supposedly they have a sweet nectar that is edible. So I nibbled on one petal, and one of the stamens inside. It has a slightly bitter spicy peppery taste, sort of like allspice.

This video talks about the nectar, but I've never noticed nectar dripping from my tree. Nor did I find any nectar in the couple of blossoms I checked today, although it was raining earlier. Most of the open blossoms look sort of decayed/unpleasant inside, or with bugs on them, so I wouldn't want to taste them. Even a recently opened clean-looking one had tiny bugs inside when I looked closer.

The person speaking in that video has a voice and accent very like my step-mom's (who is also from Massachusetts).

My grandmother who was also from Massachusetts had a different accent, maybe because she lived in California for a long time.

Jupiter is bright, right next to the moon tonight.

Yesterday I saw a hawk, on a low tree limb not 20 feet away from me. It must have been a young one; it flew up to that limb as I was walking by, else I might not have even noticed it.

When I work from home, alone, I'm such a chatterbox sometimes, talking to myself. Sometimes my voice even gets hoarse from it, though that might also be due to outbursts of annoyance. It's strange, as I hardly ever feel the urge to talk to myself out loud like that when I'm at work, or around other people.

Went grocery shopping yesterday. Red chard (so pretty - the combination of reddish purplish stalks and green leafy parts), later cooked for dinner. Big sweet ripe raspberries - they drew my eye as they were larger and darker-colored than the ones in the adjoining cartons. But they really were raspberries. Their taste reminds me of ones picked wild in Germany.

In Germany, vanilla ice cream with hot raspberries is a common dessert. The combination truly tastes wonderful.

Right before entering the 2nd store at 6pm, nearby church-bells started ringing, and I tarried outside a while to listen. Nice sounding bells; real bells. They reminded me of Germany too.

In the 3rd store, I overheard another customer asking an employee for help in finding an item, "Jum". She had a foreign accent, and I wondered what this "Jum" might be. Jumbo? Gumbo? Jambalaya? Even when she explained to the employee that it was something one eats at breakfast with bread and butter, both he and I were still puzzled. (Does one eat gumbo for breakfast?) When she mentioned marmelaide, it finally clicked for me. Jam! The poor employee still wasn't getting it, so I went over to help him out.

Later, it occurred to me that the woman's accent was very familiar to me. Sort of Indian; sort of German. I can hear someone's voice in my head speaking with the same accent, but can't remember who it belongs too. Maybe someone on TV or in a movie.

When I happen to curse at something on the computer (etc.) while Zorro is nearby, it makes her get up and slink out of the room as if I'm scolding her. Even something innocuous like "Oh, dangit!". This is making me more cognizant of these outbursts.

I tried calling one of my aunts in Germany, but except for a few words, she couldn't hear me. FF had been able to call her and speak to her last week. Why is it that even when I'm speaking in my loudest voice right into the phone, I'm not audible? Why is it that I always seem to have the bad handset, no matter which one I use? How can it be that people don't hear me, even when I'm yelling? Why did it used to be, that I could be on one handset, and not be heard, yet FF, on another handset was heard just fine? Why is FF's loud voice so much louder than my loud voice?

Oh well. Guess I won't be able to speak to her again, unless I visit in person. I guess FF used to do most of the talking anyway... actually, the aunt did a whole lot of the talking too. In person, you can just nod your head and mutter appropriately, and the other person doesn't really need to be able to hear you.

one thing i just can't stand is baby-noises in songs. it totally gets on my nerve. and it doesn't sound good, so why do they do it?

at work today, i think i saw a guy wearing an earring. he walked by too fast for me to be totally certain. but, cool.
i don't remember having seen any earring-wearing guys at work before. and i even know this guy slightly, though i didn't recall his name till several hours later.

and we had a little work-celebration today too - got to watch a movie. Finding Nemo. So now I've seen it. I even figured out on my own that it was Ellen DeGeneres doing the voice of that one fish... After realizing that, the fish even seemed to look a lot like her. How an animated fish can have such a resemblance to a real human person is rather amazing.
And it's curious how much of an effect someone's voice can have on how you perceive their personality. do people's voices reflect their personalities that much? does my voice reflect my personality?
or can one get misimpressions from basing one's perception of a person on their voice... their speech, their manner... hmm.

i'm going to get a cell-phone. yep, much easier than the other idea currently on my list of things to do. and my mom thinks its a wonderful idea, since she'll be able to use the phone while i'm on the internet.

and Taboo's closing on Feb 8. which is too soon for me and still too wintry so i won't get to see it. sigh. too bad. but i've got other things to do than go all the way to NYC just to watch something interesting yet not emotionally impacting... but, boy george... yeah, well. but. it's just a show.
