(I'm splitting my prior post into 2 separate ones, in order to expand on a subject.)
My impression of the Transparent pilot:
I'm intrigued by 2 of the main characters (Maura & Ali), and somewhat put off by the other 2. I was quite put off by the sex scenes, and by the many shots of bare breasts, and squeezing of breasts. The bathroom scene showing bare female buttocks didn't bother me but together with all the rest, the show seems like it was scripted to attract viewers who like female nudity and sex scenes. So while I'm intrigued by part of the story, I'm also put off by a lot of it.
.
Not liking the nudity and sex scenes probably makes me sound like a prude. Maybe I am? But I don't think that movies/films/books shouldn't be allowed to have scenes like those; I just don't personally like them.
Why don't I like them? What is it about them that so puts me off? It's not just any sex scenes, or any nudity that puts me off. Only certain kinds. (Although most explicit mainstream sex scenes would fall into that category, which is why I don't watch porn.)
Take the show "Gray's Anatomy". Its characters were having sex or talking about sex and relationships all the time, but those scenes didn't bother me much (beyond rolling my eyes and thinking "there they go at it again!"). But most of those scenes weren't very explicit and didn't involve nudity.
I suspect that what I feel is similar to the aversion that some hetero people feel when watching explicit gay scenes. But what exactly is it that turns me off, and why?
Josh's character turns me off. Why? This may be due to a combination of all the scenes with him which turned me off. He seems grovelly and whiny. He has a full beard. Full beards, especially on younger people, tend to look unattractive to me. The (refuted) implication early on that he was having sex with young possibly underage sisters left me with a bad impression of him. Apparently he uses pot; substance dependencies give me a bad impression of people. And then there were his sex scenes, liberally coupled with bare breasts.
Breasts in sex scenes turn me off. Why? Breasts are unsexual to me; they are not a source of arousal. Having other people treat them as a source of arousal feels inherently *wrong* to me. Maybe it would be how someone without a foot fetish would feel while watching porn involving foot fetishes(*)? Would that turn someone else off? Or would they just be amused by it?
The brief sex scene with him and the other person was even more off-putting to me. It did start off in an intriguing way. But the flimsy dress. The position of his head and her leg. The daggone breast. The grovelling-ness of it. Off-putting to me. Also, the lack of any prior indication of why the people involved are attracted to each other.
There was one scene in the show involving full female nudity. This scene wasn't sexual, and it didn't turn me off. It might even be significant to the plot - possibly showing that the character is displeased with her body. But I'm not sure; it also sort of seemed like more nudity having been put in the film just for the heck of it.
The brief ass spanking amused me, perhaps because of how "out of place" it seemed. But it also hinted that the character in question has proclivities closer to my own, which makes me more intrigued by her.
(*) - Yet feet are neutral to me; I don't have particularly positive or negative feelings about them. Whereas even outside of the context of sex, breasts are negative to me; I dislike having them.
At least this show didn't include sex scenes involving high-heel shoes. That is another object which is inherently unsexual to me (and to which I also have negative feelings), and which feels *wrong* to me, being depicted as a source of (or accompaniment to) arousal.
