I've been trying to figure out a mystery of why my bathroom sink drain would smell slightly like sulfur after turning the cold water on in the mornings or after the sink wasn't used for a while... and the kitchen sink drain too. It started happening after I plugged a small leak in one of the drain pipes in the basement. I've been thinking it could be a problem with the main vent stack, but normally there would be other clues if that were the problem, which haven't been the case for me. And the kitchen sink has its own vent stack, anyway, which I noticed today. I removed the plug I had put in the pipe, and the smell went away. Now I put the plug back in, to see if the smell comes back again. It's hard because it's one of those things you have to wait several days to test out.

The basement is a maze of pipes, vents, and cables. Whenever I go down there, I notice something I did not notice before, or figure out how something is connected, which I had not realized before.

It is boggling how many different pipes and lines there are down there, criss-crossing everywhere. Input cold water lines. Hot water lines. Drain pipes. Vent pipes. Gas lines. Heater exhaust pipes. Insulated HVAC ducts. Uninsulated HVAC air input ducts. Power cables. Telephone cables. A bunch of other old cables lying around which probably used to be connected but look like they aren't anymore.

The water lines and drains go to and from each and every fixture that uses water - the sinks, the toilets, the tub, the washing machine, the dishwasher, the refrigerator (even though I don't use the water from the fridge dispenser).

Then there are the vents on the roof and side of the house. The drain vent stacks. The heater exhaust / the shower fan ... haven't figured out yet whether those 2 are using the same vent or not ... the stove vent, the oven vent (since the oven is an enclosed fixture), the dryer vent, the water heater exhaust vent.. the attic fan...

The day seemed to go by very fast today. I was going to try to recover a home video from a corrupt DVD, but it turned out I had the wrong DVD. I put a makeshift drawer-stop on a drawer which didn't have one, then put some more pipe-sleeves on the water pipes in the basement, then replaced a few fluorescent light tubes in the garage. And by then, it was already dark outside.

Now, I am having acid reflux from dinner... I guess it was too acidic, or what else would cause that? I don't usually get reflux, even from acidic foods. But I got it yesterday too after eating the same thing... I guess I will have to throw the rest of it (baba ganouj) out, even though it tastes good.

I am downloading tax forms. 4 years ago... I was doing taxes

The power went out at my work. So I went to eat lunch early, and then for a walk. It was very cold outside, though sunny. In a sandy area, I came across some neat small ice formations - they looked like crystals pushed out of the sand and/or like little white long-stemmed mushrooms. I looked it up, and they are called ice needles.

If I had taken my new cell phone with me, and had remembered that it has a camera, I could have taken a photo of the ice needles I saw. I still haven't gotten the internet working on it though. Once I get the right data cable, I will try "seem editing" and/or reinstalling the phone's Motorola software to see if that helps. As well as installing Opera Mini. In any case, I've got some learning to do about cell phone software and modding.

If the power still isn't back on at work yet, I will go wrap some fiberglass insulation around the water pipes where they exit from the water heater. I noticed those pipes were quite warm and having them uninsulated probably wastes a bit of energy and heat. I also need to measure the diameter of the pipes so I can get some fitting pipe-sleeves to put on the pipes, further away from the water heater and its flue.

Today I...

Did neti since I've been having bad allergies lately.

Fixed the bi-fold sliding doors in the hallway. I drilled some holes so that I could screw the top end pieces in, which keep the doors in the right place.

Checked the instructions for the bathroom faucet I had bought, to see if I would need any other supplies for installing it. Added plumber's putty and plumber's tape to my shopping list. Tried turning the shut-off valves under the sink, and found out that I can't budge them - they seem to be stuck.

Fixed the blinds in the middle bay window. Replaced the turn-mechanism, and re-sewed a thread which had frayed, to keep a slat in the right place.

Went to the hardware store. Got metal tape to patch the crack I had noticed previously in the HVAC duct in the basement. Also got 2 towel racks, since both bathrooms are quite lacking in places to hang towels, and a drawer slide mechanism so I can fix one of the drawers. Also got assorted other items.

After getting home, realized that I had forgotten to give my 10%-off coupon to the check-out clerk at the hardware store. Ranted and raved at my misfortune and incapability of remembering to use such coupons during check-out (this has happened several times lately).

Went under the house and patched the duct. Checked if there are any cut-off valves down there for the water, or if there's only the one by the street. Tried to see how the bathroom outlets are grounded... couldn't figure it out since they seem to have the same wires as the other outlets which aren't grounded... unless it is just a case of the wires needing to be connected in those other outlets, which would be a GOOD thing. It is a veritable maze of pipes and ducts and wires under the house, and challenging to determine where each one comes from and goes to. There seem to be many old cables down there too, which seem to be disconnected or no longer used. But the crawlspace is relatively spacious, which makes it not too difficult to crouch and get around down there. I noticed that the water heater is gas, not electric. Perhaps I had noted that before, but forgotten.

Found a slat of wood in the basement which I may be able to use to fix the gap in the floor near the wall in one of the bedrooms. I'll need to cut it to size though.

Called the hardware store and asked if I could return and still get the 10% discount. They said yes, so I returned and got the discount. This involved the customer service clerk entering an ungodly amount of numbers in the register. But the whole trip was under 25 minutes.

Picked up some trash from the street.

Ate dinner. Made lunches for next week at work. Blended up a batch of cashew milk.

Wrote about my day on LJ.
