mouth sensitivities

When I make brownies or cookie bars, the edges (naturally) end up harder or crunchier than the interior parts. When cutting them into like-sized pieces as I used to do, many of the pieces would (naturally) end up with at least one hard/crunchy edge. I disliked those parts as they would sometimes hurt* my mouth and gums when I bit on them.

A few years ago when making cookies bars, I started cutting off the hard parts first in a narrow strip along all 4 sides of the pan. That way, the rest of the cookie bars are pleasantly soft and chewy on all sides. As a bonus, I even enjoy eating the harder edges when they are cut this way. In narrow strips, they are easier to eat without hurting my mouth.

..

I very much dislike the rough dry fuzzy feeling of peach skins in my mouth. Therefore I peel peaches before eating them. But it seems a shame to throw away presumably healthy and rich-in-fiber peach skins, especially if the peach was reasonably ripe, in which case the skins aren't quite as bad.

So now I've found that I enjoy eating peeled peach skins on their own, as long as I fold each piece so that the fuzzy skin is on the inside and the (thin layer of) peach flesh is on the outside.

..

*I have what may be called a "prominent" alveolar ridge. I estimate it extends back at least 1cm behind my upper front teeth before curving up to the top of my palate. Chewing hard crunchy food often makes that area of my mouth sore. As does biting into hard fruit like apples or pears.

This is the end of 2 nice relaxing (sort of) weeks of vacation. At least I was able to sleep as long as I wanted nearly every morning, in spite of going to bed very late. I got various things done. Some things finished, some things further along.

I didn't manage to make an orthodontic appointment yet; still need to get together a list of potential ones to call. It's too bad that this tooth problem manifested a few weeks after our yearly benefits enrollment period at work. Not knowing that I'd need it, I chose a dental plan without adult orthodontic coverage. But it's not a big deal. Even the plans that cover it, only cover a certain amount anyway. But now, not having one of those plans makes choosing an orthodontist more complicated. Should I sign up for a discount program, and see who in my area is in such a program? Or should I use one of the orthodontists in my dental insurance's network (though I don't see what the point of that is, as I'm not covered)? Or try to find overlap between the two? And so on.

I had been feeling optimistic about getting braces, but reading several pages which indicated that dentists now recommend that retainers be worn ***for the rest of your life*** to prevent teeth from shifting back got me feeling down about it. Which is why I let the matter drop for now. I went through all that trouble last year or the year before, getting myself a doctor, and it didn't even really do any good with the problem I have with my hands. Well... It did relieve my worries about having degenerative arthritis. So it did do some good, even though I still have no explanation for what is wrong. But my hands got significantly better on their own.

At the moment, I don't think it's possible that my teeth will get better on their own, but who knows? I discovered something today, about eating when one's upper and lower molars don't touch. Eating individual pieces of raw spinach (or other raw greens) is not a good idea, as it's nearly impossible to chew them up, and without chewing them, they tend to stick in one's throat. But when they are in a sandwich, I can chew them up ok, because there's an extra layer of bread and stuff filling up the space between the lower and upper teeth.

Anyway, I got home too late tonight (considering I need to be up early for work), after spending most of my vacation at Qiao's place. I went to turn on the heat, and discovered that the thermostat's batteries needed to be changed, and of course the old settings were lost, so I had to reset them. One setting always gives me trouble (getting it into "Hold" mode instead of "Vacation" mode). I had thought I might be able to make it to bed by 1am. But now, I hadn't even unpacked my car, I just wanted to turn on the heat, and this garbedly gook dangnabit thing won't work!!! I lost my temper and yelled obscenities.

Not a good way to end a nice relaxing (sort of) vacation. But it's ok; I'm calm again now. I checked the notes on my computer from last time, which thankfully say how to put it into Hold mode, and got it working. I still have my pretty Christmas tree here, and I haven't turned off the pretty lights on the porch yet either. Though I'll probably take them (not the tree) down later this week.

Ok. There's a good chance I can make it to bed by 2:15am now, if I apply myself to it.

I dislike it when the inside edges of fork tines are rough; it makes eating unpleasant, unless I'm very careful not to have the fork touch my tongue. That's one of the reasons my favorite fork is my favorite, because its tines are smooth. But how to know, when buying cutlery, if the tines are smooth or not? Most of the loose individual forks I've seen for sale, as at Walmart or World Market, have rough inside edges. Not to mention, the tines also generally have thick squarish ends which I don't like either. When they are part of a box set, it is hard to tell if the tines are smooth or not.

The same could be said for spoons... sometimes, spoons have rough outside edges, but it is not as common as with fork tines, and tends to only be the very cheap brands.

This online store says that smooth tines are polished more:
Higher-priced patterns will have more care given to polishing the fork tines. While it's very subtle and subconscious, your lips and tongue will feel the slight roughness. When you eat with a pattern that has well-polished tines, it feels smooth all the way through.

Point of Reference:
This Ikea Fornuft brand (marked with number "223 32") which Qiao bought has lovely spoons, and the knives are ok. They all have a nice shiny finish. But the fork tines are rough and unpleasant on the inside. The Ikea website lists them at ~$8 per 20 pieces (clearance price, perhaps?), while Amazon lists them at ~$15 per 20. So apparently I need to look for ones which are more expensive than that.

These look nice from the photo. $25 for a 5 piece set, though if one buys the forks individually, they are $18 each!

I previously posted about iTunes charging me an extra dollar for a song I bought back in early June. The first time I contacted them about it, they said it was an authorization charge and that it would "drop off". I waited another month to make sure, but it didn't drop off. After that, I had trouble getting through to their customer service again, and when I finally did, they said that Paypal should have refunded it to me. So I contacted PayPal, who promptly refunded it to me with no hassle. That was mid-August.

So imagine my consternation, when in mid-October, my PayPal account showed that iTunes had now also refunded me $1. Two weeks later, iTunes sent me an email. It didn't mention my prior communications with them; it only said:
You may have recently noticed that your PayPal account was erroneously charged for one or more authorizations from the iTunes Store, iBooks Store, App Store, Apple News, or iCloud, in the amount of $1.00. This issue has been resolved and all applicable charges have been reversed. You should see the reversals on your PayPal account within five business days.

So perhaps it wasn't only me with the problem, and perhaps they refunded everyone who was erroneously charged. Now I feel slightly bad that PayPal gave me a dollar too, when apparently it wasn't their fault after all.

A new browser for me to try out: Vivaldi. It's not open-source, though.

Dirk Gently, season 2, continues to be amazingly good and entertaining.

The 9 hour fast wasn't that bad. I started to get very hungry about half-way through, but had plenty of work to distract me. My stomach didn't even grumble during our staff meeting. After the health screening, I ate my "lunch". Soon after, I became VERY sleepy/tired. I could have curled up on the floor and fallen asleep right there. Instead, I wrapped up my work and went home. Now I've got a slight headache, but am about to go to bed.

I didn't get a good amount of sleep last night, so I can't entirely blame the sudden sleepiness on the fasting. But it was unusual for the sleepiness to hit me like a ton of bricks after eating, when I had been ok up until then. So maybe it was related to digesting a bunch of carbohydrates on an empty stomach.

I have a health screening scheduled for late tomorrow afternoon, and I'm supposed to fast for at least 9 hours before. Previous health screenings I've done were all in the morning, where most of the fasting hours were overnight, and I could simply delay breakfast by a few hours. This time I'll eat an early breakfast and delay lunch by several hours.

Normally on work days, I eat breakfast between 8 and 9am, and am quite hungry by 2pm (often, I don't take my lunch break until then). Tomorrow, it will be an extra 4 hours of not eating. I'm dreading it but also looking forward to the challenge.

I'm impressed by Muslims who fast during the daylight hours of Ramadan for a whole month. (I don't agree with people being forced to do it, but for those who do it willingly or not, it seems quite a feat.) According to various sources, in most places Muslims fast for at least 12 hours each day. They don't even drink anything during that time! At least I can drink water tomorrow. Imagine being in a hot desert country in the summer, and not drinking anything all day.
