I installed some Firefox add-ons.

DictionarySearch
Lets you select a word on a page and right-click to look it up in a dictionary. Up to 4 dictionary (or any other search) sites can be configured. Nice and simple.

Unofficial Google Translate
Pretty much what I was looking for. Adds some context menu items which let you translate the current page via Google Translator. Once you set the "Translate From" option as AutoDetect, and the "Translate To" option as English, those will be the defaults from then on.

Foxlingo
Also lets you translate webpages. Adds a toolbar instead of adding entries to the context menu. I like that it lets you use choose from several different translating websites - so you can open the same page with both Google Translator and Babelfish, for example. But I don't like toolbars up there taking away from my screen space, and I don't like that it includes a search-box that can't be hidden.
Ah, I can hide the toolbar and only make it visible when I want to use it. I'll leave it like that for a while and see how I like it.
Update - 2008/11/29. I uninstalled FoxLingo, as it was causing Firefox to take noticeably longer to open new browser windows.

I also checked again whether I can get internet access for cheaper. I currently have Earthlink through Time Warner Cable (TWC), for $41.95 a month. For some reason, DSL is not available at this address. TWC also has other internet options, including slower speeds at cheaper prices. I'm considering switching to one of those, but I'm not sure if they include webspace like Earthlink does. If they don't, I'd have to decide what to do with my website.

AngelFire must be a pretty good free webspace provider. There is one person's website which hasn't been updated since 2001 (which I still have bookmarked) and the main page is still accessible.

GOM player: a media player which can play 3gp videos (cellphone vid format) as well as other formats. Also lets you slow down or speed up the playback with hotkeys:
http://www.gomplayer.com

.

I found an Indian version of Michael Jackson's Thriller on YouTube.

But this version, with English subtitles, is much funnier:
[unfortunately, the video is no longer available]

I remembered another thing I wanted to post about! I found a better utility program for increasing my screen's brightness than the one I was using before. This one lets you set up customized gamma/brightness/contrast levels and assign hotkeys to them. So I put the program in my startup folder, and now whenever I want to temporarily increase my screen's brightness, in order to view photos or vids, I can just press Shift-F1, and to get it back to normal, Ctrl-F1.

The program is named "Gamma Panel":

It would be even niftier if I could find a program similar to this, but which would only change the brightness in a sizeable rectangle on the screen which I could move around with my mouse, similar to the magnification function the mouse software came with. Then I could just position the rectangle over the particular image or video I want to see brighter, without being lambasted by bright light from the entire screen.

My Yahoo Messenger (an older build of 8.1) wasn't working right anymore - it was disconnecting me whenever anyone on my contact list was online. I was only able to sign in successfully when no one on my contact list was online. So I uninstalled it, downloaded the latest build (8.1.0.410, I believe), and reinstalled it. But now, I can't even login... when I start the program, it immediately quits before even showing the login window. I tried temporarily turning off my firewall, but it still did not work, so it must not be related to that. What might be causing this?

Update: Reinstalled YIM again, and now it starts ok. But now I'm having the original problem again (get kicked out, if anyone on my contact list (including myself) is logged in as visible).

Update2: Changed the Preferences to "Firewall with no proxy", and now it seems to be working ok.
... checking my notes (I should have thought to check them to begin with), I had the exact same issue last year, and fixed it the same way. I wonder if one of the Yahoo updates changed the settings back to the default, which caused the problem.

I've finished coding my screensaver, and have named it "KaleidoShine" - this is an improvement, I feel, from the "Newwave" name I had used previously for the regular (non-screensaver) program.

If your computer is running Windows and you'd like to try the screensaver out, it can be downloaded from here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~shaku8jinn/mir/mo/zip/KaleidoShine.zip

Unzip the KaleidoShine.scr file and place it in your Windows\System32 folder. Then it will be available for selection when you right-click on your desktop, open the Properties window, and go to the "Screen Savers" tab. You can configure the speed, shapes, and number of shapes in the Settings window.

The original Windows program is still available for download from here:
http://home.earthlink.net/~shaku8jinn/mir/mo/givez.htm#newwave
It has additional color configuration options that I did not include in the screensaver.

The online java version which has fewer features but which can run in a browser is also available at the above link; but it is somewhat buggy. On my machine for example, I have to switch to another window and back again before it displays right.

PG Offline is free to use for 30 days, but costs $20 thereafter. It puts the messages into a .mdb format (Access database), and provides for nicely formatted browsing of the messages via the PG Offline tool. But saving it as another format is not straight-forward.

The best way I found is to select "Messages - Show Digest" from the menu to view a certain number of the messages on a single page, then hit CTRL-A and CTRL-C to do a select-all and copy of the text, and then paste it into a text file. The digest window does not always display all the messages correctly, but the data is there* when you paste it into the text file.

The above seems the best option to me; I also tried the below, but it is more complex, and for a group with a lot of messages, it does not seem practical to me to archive them as individual files.

*On further testing, not all of the data is there, after all... some messages seem to be missing the text. Oh well. The *.mdb file can also be opened in MS Excel, but the message texts are not easy to read as they include HTML tags. Also note that the *.mdb file includes the userid/password used for downloading the messages, although in an encrypted format.

messages-1.14.tar.gz
lets you download messages as individual text files. Each file includes a lengthy section of email-headers, and some odd parts at the end which apparently Yahoo adds.
It requires Perl to run. It also requires the Crypt::SSLeay module, which does not come as part of the ActivePerl package, and is not downloadable from the ActivePerl ppm repository, as they are a Canadian company and do not have the required permit for distributing cryptographic software.

A Windows version of
ActivePerl
can be downloaded and installed in order to run the Perl script.

Crypt::SSLeay can be downloaded from the uwinnipeg PPM repository using the PPM tool which comes with the ActivePerl installation. I first tried installing it from the command line, but that did not seem to work.
You may also need to add the Perl\bin installation folder to your PATH environment variable (if you didn't select that option during installation of ActivePerl), so that ssleay32.dll will be found when running the perl script.

Use this command to run the Perl script:
[\perl\bin\]perl -T yahoo2maildir.pl {group name} [{begin message id} [{end message id}]]

NOTE: if you enter the wrong password, you get this misleading message:
[INFO] Successfully logged in as [your userid].
Couldn't get message count

oh well.

I installed the trial version of Ulead VideoStudio yesterday and was able to capture a clip. I played around with some of the video effects, and it seemed pretty neat. Seemed like it would be a fun thing to play with for a while.

But today, I was looking through some of the capture options... and in doing so, switched the capture format from WMV to MPEG and back again... and ever since that, whenever I try to go to the capture dialog, the program crashes. Even after having rebooted.

Sigh.

So much for that.

Sigh.

Yesterday I was able to make lightning come out of my hand! And I had glowing balls of light around me! And I was able to do gamma correction on the whole clip!

But today I can't even do a capture. Boo hoo.

ZoneAlarm question

This morning I tried connecting from my home computer to my work computer using the company-provided VPN software for connecting to the work network... at first it didn't work, which gave me a fright (that after all the trouble I've had trying out various Anti-virus/Anti-spyware/firewalls, that even ZoneAlarm would not suffice )
...but after adding the destination IP address to the Trusted Zone in the ZoneAlarm firewall settings, I was able to connect to the network.

Then I tried using Remote Desktop Connection to connect to my computer, and that wasn't working. Finally determined that if I use my work computer's IP #, it works, but using the machine name does not work. However, if I turn ZoneAlarm off, then I am also able to use the machine name.

Also, pinging the machine name does not work when ZoneAlarm is on, but works when it is off. Pinging other web addresses like yahoo.com works with it on or off.

Do any of you know what setting in ZoneAlarm would allow me to either connect using the machine name, or to ping my machine name in order to get the IP # ? My work machine's IP # is not constant, and I don't want to have to remember to write it down every time I leave the office.

...

Well, if I change my Internet Zone security from "High" to "Medium" AND change the custom settings for the Medium zone to NOT "Block incoming NetBIOS (ports 135, 137-9, 445)", then I can ping my machine name. But I'd rather leave the security set at High. Isn't there some other way...?

...

(Update)
Solution:

After connecting to the network with the VPN software, do "ipconfig /all" from a command prompt and note the IP #s for the network's DNS and WINS servers. Add those IP #'s to the firewall's Trusted Zone.

Hopefully those IP #s will be constant so I won't have to change them next time I want to connect.

The bottom portion of the gutter downspout on the corner of the house by my window was clogged full of dirt. It was raining this morning, and making a bothersome sound... not as bad as the knock-knock-knock noise it sometimes made, but enough to get me to finally decide to take it apart and clean it out. So now it is clear again and hopefully won't make horrible noises anymore.

I uninstalled Panda [err... Norton! I meant Norton! Panda was before the Norton...] and replaced it with the trial version of ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite. This one seems to be doing good so far.

Got my emails updated everywhere, and got Thunderbird working satisfactorily.

I want to upgrade the RAM in my machine. Currently I have 256 Mb (2x128). I can go up to 1.5 Gb (3x512). I wonder how much I should get? Would 512 (+256) be sufficient, or might it be worth going ahead and getting a gig, or even 1.5 gig?
