I object to the current trend of referring to a certain kind of person as a "Karen". Karen is a common name. Just because a few people with that name have done objectionable things, is no reason to besmirch everyone else who happens to have the same name by associating them with that particular group of people. The same would be the case for referring negatively to any other group of people by any other common (or maybe even uncommon) name.

Besides being a common English name, Karen is also the name of an ethnic group of people from Mynamar.

I've known several people named Karen and it bothers me to think how they would feel reading these things. Imagine your name being used in place of "Karen". How would it make you feel? Please don't do it. Find a better word or phrase if you must.

by [personal profile] andrewducker. List 10 books that have stayed with you in some way. Don't take more than a few minutes and do not think too hard. They do not have to be the "right" books or great works of literature, just ones that have affected you in some way.

Impossible for me to do without taking more than a few minutes*, but still, I didn't think too hard about it. So it could be that I forgot ones which were more significant to me than these.

*As in me thinking, "umm, oh, what about that book with that guy and the talking horses**. What was the name of those books?" and "oh, that book with the girl in the boat***. Was that Riddlemaster of Hed? Was that Le Guin?..."

1. DragonLance series by Weis & Hickman
2. Shadow Man by Melissa Scott
3. Bone Dance by Emma Bull
4. The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper
5. **The Last Herald Mage trilogy by Mercedes Lackey
6. ***Duel of Sorcery trilogy by Jo Clayton
7. The Gate of Ivory trilogy by Doris Egan
8. The Chanur books by C.J. Cherryh
9. Splinter of the Mind's Eye by Alan Dean Foster
10. The Return of the Jedi novelization by James Kahn

Now, if any of you want to list ten books, consider yourself tagged!

When you see this, take a minute and share five good things of your day with the world, uncut.

1. I was amused that a review of an electrician on Angie's List ended with the sentence, "And he had pretty blue eyes."
2. I drove down some streets I hadn't been on before.
3. I picked some blackberries and ate them.
4. I got a surprise phone-call and a ride in a nifty new car.
5. I finished putting together a rough itinerary of my trip to Germany in August.

If there is one person or more on your friends list who makes your world a better place just because they exist and who you would not have met (in real life or not) without the internet, then post this same sentence in your journal.

1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people and post a comment to [livejournal.com profile] dame_grise's blog (your tagees will post to mine, etc.) once you've posted your three sentences.
(The last step is the twist, because you don't post to my journal).

---

Well, the closest book is my digital camera manual. Page 123 has some instructions in French.

Next closest "book" is a thick Computer Shopper magazine. Page 123 is an ad for a computer.

Next closest book is "Engineer-In-Training Reference Manual", but its pages are numbered chapter-dash-page, so there isn't a page 123.

This kind of meme never works well for me, because the interesting books are never close by. Oh well.

I had a book of poetry closer by last week, but then I moved it. It's got a poem on page 123, but the poem isn't punctuated. I was considering posting part of it, but now I feel uncomfortable with that idea because the person who wrote it is someone on my LJ friends-list, and it's their copyrighted material. So, umm, well. Like I said, this kind of meme never works well for me.

Just out of curiosity, since everyone's results which I have seen so far for this quiz have been rather similar, with all the Democrats at top and Republicans way at the bottom, I took it again. This time I chose the answers which I felt were most Republican and/or the opposite of what I would answer.

99% Fred Thompson
98% Mitt Romney
86% John McCain
81% Mike Huckabee
80% Tom Tancredo
76% Ron Paul
74% Rudy Giuliani
22% Bill Richardson
16% Joe Biden
15% Hillary Clinton
12% John Edwards
11% Barack Obama
10% Chris Dodd
8% Mike Gravel
4% Dennis Kucinich

2008 Presidential Candidate Matching Quiz

With the previous results based on my real answers, I'm a bit surprised that I didn't score higher with Kucinich. But then, it is just a little quiz and not necessarily very accurate. I still need to research the candidates more.

Since [livejournal.com profile] yonmei did it... and since pirates are one of my favorite thingsies...

My Fantasy Pirate League, by Darkoshi age 33 and then some:

CAPTAIN: (because I sure as heck don't want to be in charge of this motley lot!)
Pippi Longstocking - She's a natural-born pirate, oh yes she is!!! And she's got the gumption, enthusiasm, and positive energy to lead my motley crew!

FIRST MATE:
Jack Sparrow - Because! He's the bestest pirate ever!

SECOND MATE:
Legolas - sure, he's an elf. But I think he'd make a good pirate, too. And he'd keep us from straying into evil activities.

THIRD MATE:
Xev/Zev - if we set anchor by a mysterious and forboding looking island, she'd explore it for us!

COOKS (2):
Doctor Who - (any or all of them). Of course they wouldn't want to be stuck on a pirate ship all the time, but with the Tardis, they could zip in and out whenever they felt like it, and could bring back munchies from other dimensions for us all to eat!

Neelix - because he can cook! (And in case the Doctors forget to return with those munchies)

TRUSTY CREW (12):

Lando Calrissian - He's charming and smooth-talking. He'd be our diplomatic officer in charge of dealing with hostile enemies.

Raistlin - ummm.... just because having an evil wizard on board might be fun.

Darth Maul - to keep Raistlin company!

Joxer - He could keep us entertained in the evenings by composing rowdy sing-along songs for us!

Cyndi Lauper - Because pirates just wanna have fun!!

Darkoshi - well, even if I'm not captain, I do still get to be part of the crew, don't I?

Grace Jones - umm, yeah. She'd make a beautiful mean-looking pirate. I'm trying to keep the gender ratio onboard a bit balanced; have you noticed?

lessee... who else... **brain is beginning to ache**...

[5 other stunningly perfect visions of pirateness]

CABIN BOYS:
Tao (from Beastmaster) - well, he's cute.

Hermione Granger - well, she's smart and sensible.

SURGEON/DOCTOR:
Julian Bashir - why not?
